Versatility and Control: TaylorMade Introduces Hi-Toe 4 Wedges

In the world of golf, perfecting the short game can make the difference between a good score and a great score. TaylorMade recently introduced the Hi-Toe 4 wedges, an evolution of their successful Hi-Toe range, designed to set new standards in control and versatility. These wedges are the result of continuous research and development and promise to improve the game around the green for golfers of all abilities and playing conditions.

TaylorMade Hi-Toe 4 Wedges Continue Successful Series

Building upon the success of its predecessors, the Hi-Toe 4 wedges bring a new level of innovation to the course. As described by Matt Bovee, TaylorMade’s Global Category Director of Irons and Wedges, the new wedges “are a great option for any player who gains confidence from a wedge with a larger face and full-face grooves to ensure maximum spin regardless of where you strike it on the face. Now with Spin Tread RAW face technology and a new array of grinds, the Hi-Toe 4 has more performance and versatility than ever before.”

Larger Profile and Full-Face Grooves for Ultimate Control

One of the most noticeable changes in the Hi-Toe 4 wedges is the more pronounced toe mass pad, which gives the club a larger profile. This design feature provides golfers with an added layer of confidence, which should enable them to execute a full suite of short game shots with ease. Additionally, the wedges feature full-face grooves on lofts of 54°, 56°, 58°, and 60°, allowing golfers to utilize the entire face and strike the ball with good control from various parts of the face.

The Hi-Toe 4 wedges also incorporate an elevated center of gravity (CG), similar to the Milled Grind 4 wedges, promoting a low launch and maximum spin. This results in a penetrating, high-spin ball flight that should remain consistent across different playing conditions.

Debut of the Spin Tread Technology and Enhanced Aesthetics

TaylorMade’s Spin Tread technology makes its debut in the Hi-Toe wedge line with the Hi-Toe 4. This face finish is designed to increase friction and spin, displacing moisture in wet conditions to maintain control. Whether it’s a downpour or a dewy morning, golfers can expect the Hi-Toe 4 wedges to deliver consistent performance. The raw face finish reduces glare and enhances the overall appearance of the club.

Source: TaylorMade

The Hi-Toe 4 wedges not only perform but also stand out visually. The grooves extend across the entire clubface, ensuring maximum spin regardless of where the ball is struck. A distinctive gold bottom groove contrasts with the copper finish, assisting golfers in centering the ball at address and aiming accurately at the target. The copper finish not only reduces glare but also develops a unique patina over time, adding a touch of personalization to each wedge.

All-Terrain Grinds for All Playing Conditions

Recognizing the diverse needs of golfers, TaylorMade offers the Hi-Toe 4 wedges in multiple All-Terrain grinds. Each grind is machine-milled to ensure maximum sole consistency, catering to a wide range of playing conditions and swing styles. As Greg Cesario from the TaylorMade Wedge Design Team explains, these grinds were developed to offer golfers versatility and forgiveness, whether they are tackling bunkers or varying lies on the course.

Grind Description Available Lofts
ATS (All Terrain Standard Grind) The most versatile grind, suitable for players with a neutral club angle. It enables generous manipulation of the clubface. 50°, 52°, 54°, 56°, 58°, 60°
ATV (All Terrain Versatility Grind) Asymmetrical bounce with concave sole, ideal for flat entry angles and firm terrain. 56°, 58°, 60°
ATC (All Terrain C Grind) Lowest bounce option with unique C-sole. Suitable for players with flat turns and firm conditions. 58°, 60°

Pricing, Availability, and Customization

Golfers can pre-order the Hi-Toe 4 wedges starting August 14th at a price of £149 / €199 / SEK 2,199 / NOK 2,199 / DKK 1,499 / CHF 199 per wedge. The wedges come standard with the True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue 115g steel shaft and the Lamkin Crossline 360 Black/Copper 52g grip.

For those seeking a personalized touch, the My Hi-Toe 4 feature offers golfers the option to choose from fully raw, chrome, and black finishes, allowing them to tailor their clubs to their specific preferences.

Under Armour Launches Footwear Optimisation

Under Armour has announced the launch of its unique Footwear Optimisation Process in collaboration with Stoke Park and Biomecaswing at the new Under Armour Golf Footwear Performance Centre.

Under Armour’s Footwear Optimisation Process

Designed to offer golfers the pinnacle of custom fitted footwear across its Award-Winning Drive Pro Series, customers will experience a 2 hour, four-step footwear fitting like no other in the game.

The Four-Step Custom Footwear Fitting Process

The first step is an initial assessment with the golfer wearing their own footwear. An initial kinetic and kinematic assessment is carried out using the BiomecaForce system. At this point key data metrics such as club speed, ball speed, spin rate, strike location and carry distances are recorded with TrackMan.

From this initial assessment the player will be recommended one of the game-changing Drive Pro Series spiked or spikeless models based on peak force, rotation, translation figures and in line with their swing signature.

Once the selected footwear, further assessment will be conducted on the BiomecaForce system to demonstrate the measured gains in both kinetic and kinematic data and alongside the TrackMan data.

In step three, golfers receive an assessment of their feet using the market-leading SIDAS Podiatech system to better understand the foots anatomy and its impact on their own golf swing. Once completed, custom insoles are built on site to promote optimised stability and an increased ability to create higher peak forces – in turn taking the performance of their footwear even further.

Once the custom insoles are built and fitted into the Drive Pro shoes, final assessment is conducted to highlight the performance gains achieved throughout the session.

Insights on the Footwear Optimisation Process

Richard Palmer Jones, Under Armour Golf UK, said: “The Under Armour Footwear Optimisation Process utilises a unique and proprietary combination of the most advanced athlete performance tracking technology in golf. This allows golfers to understand the importance and impact of their footwear to their on-course performance in simple terms through the data improvements that we see time and again when putting people through our fitting processes. The addition of SIDAS Podiatech technology allows us to take the fitting process further through the use of custom insoles – producing the ultimate experience for any golfer looking to maximise their potential.”

Chris Murtagh, Head of Instruction at Stoke Park, said: “The opportunity to launch the Footwear Optimisation Process at Stoke Park with Under Armour is incredibly exciting. Having fit customers into the Drive Pro Series since it launched in February, we’ve seen how these products have consistently improved golfers. Utilising the BiomecaForce system alongside SIDAS Podiatech technology is the natural progression to deliver the ultimate in performance footwear. Under Armour’s mission to make athletes better has established golf footwear as an essential piece of golf equipment for the first time.”

Each session costs £500 and includes 2 hours of Biomechanical analysis, both pre and post-testing, 1 pair of Drive Pro Series Spiked or Spikeless shoes, and 1 set of custom insoles.

To find out more or book a session please contact Chris Murtagh at Stoke Park on 01753 717184 or via email at [email protected].

Mixed Quarterly Results at Callaway – Topgolf in Focus

Topgolf Callaway Brands Corp. has announced its financial results for the second quarter of 2024. While the company wants to send positive signals in some areas, it is struggling with some challenges and is particularly critical of developments in the Topgolf segment.

Callaway: Financial results for the second quarter

In the second quarter of 2024, the company generated a net income of 62 million dollars. Compared to the previous year, this represents a decline of 47.1 %. However, excluding certain exceptional items, adjusted income rose to $83 million, an increase of 9.9%. Adjusted EBITDA, which represents operating earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, was USD 206 million, exceeding expectations.

Consolidated revenue, on the other hand, fell by 1.9 % to 1,157.8 million dollars. This decline is mainly due to lower demand in the golf equipment and active lifestyle segments. In the golf equipment segment, sales fell by 8.2%, which Callaway said was the result of a planned shift of the market launch of equipment products compared to last year. This was compounded by challenges such as negative FX trends, persistently high inflation and weaker than expected visitor numbers at top golf locations.

Despite the decline in sales, the company was able to maintain its leading position in the US market for golf clubs and golf balls. Callaway’s products, in particular the new Ai Smoke clubs and Chrome Tour golf balls, continued to show strong sales figures.

Sales at Topgolf below expectations

Topgolf, a central component of the company, recorded an overall increase in sales of 5% in the second quarter of 2024, but this was mainly due to new locations. Locations that have been in operation for 24 months or more saw an 8% decline in sales. This development is due to lower customer frequency at existing locations. Commenting on Topgolf’s performance, Chip Brewer, CEO of Topgolf Callaway, said: “We have been disappointed in our stock performance for some time, as well as the more recent same venue sales performance.”

In light of these figures, the company has initiated a strategic review of Topgolf, considering various growth strategies and potential structural changes. Brewer added: “This review includes the assessment of organic strategies to return Topgolf to profitable same venue sales growth, as well as inorganic alternatives, including a potential spin of Topgolf.” However, Brewer also emphasised that the company remains a firm believer in the potential of Topgolf: “We remain convinced that Topgolf is a high-quality business with significant future opportunities. It is transforming the game of golf and we believe it will deliver significant growth and financial returns over time.”

Adjusted annual forecast and financial measures

Due to the current challenges, the company has been forced to revise its annual forecast downwards. The expected annual turnover is now between 4,200 and 4,260 million dollars, while the adjusted EBITDA is estimated at 570 to 590 million dollars.

In order to be in a stronger financial position, the company has also repaid 50 million dollars of its debt ahead of schedule and increased its liquidity, i.e. its available funds, by 136 million dollars compared to the previous year.

This summer, Under Armour is putting a modern twist on the golf classics with the release of the UA Goin’ Under Golf Collection. The Goin’ Under Collection offers head-to-toe pieces for both men and women that golfers can wear from the course to the clubhouse. In this collection, golfers will hit the green feeling optimistic and inspired to lower their score – because when you look the part, you play the part. Why not make today the day that you ‘go under’ par and play the round of your life?

Image: Under Armour

When designing new releases, Under Armour works closely with its athletes to incorporate their feedback to create performance solutions that meet and exceed their needs. With high-tech hoodies, jackets, and sweaters, this new line offers simple and clean styles that will keep golfers warm during early-morning tee times, while providing lightweight polos and tees to keep them cool as they grind through the hottest rounds.

Under Armour designer: “This accessible collection appeals to golfers of all levels and style preferences”

John O’Connor, Designer, Apparel Graphics at Under Armour: “The sport of golf has evolved tremendously so we knew we needed to evolve with it. We’re excited to bring The Goin’ Under Collection to life and offer bold options for golfers who want to stand out on the course. With both male and female golfers in mind, the Goin’ Under Collection features an assortment of polos, tees, skirts and shoes that has golfers covered from head to toe and perfectly complement some of Under Armour’s innovations. This includes Under Armour favorites like the UA Drive Goin’ Under Polo, a modern take on the signature Playoff Polo with a sport bomber collar paired with an abstract course camo print that golfers can dress with the beloved Men’s UA Drive Joggers. The UA Icon Fleece Goin’ Under Crew is fitted to layer with other pieces from the collection and pairs perfectly with the UA Empower Skort, flexible and lightweight to help female golfers feel comfortable with every swing. With a nod to one of the most iconic cinematic references in golf, the collection’s gopher mascot is also displayed across a couple of different tees and hats – perfect for the golfer ready to crush course records and stand out from the pack.

Image: Under Armour

Shoes for all course conditions

The collection also features Phantom Footwear, which was launched as a hero style earlier this season and combines the comfort of a training shoe with the traction and knit upper of a golf shoe. Prompted by the growing popularity of golf, UA took the footwear that players usually wear off the course and used it as the inspiration for creating a golf shoe. The waterproof membrane uppers keep golfers’ feet dry, and ground-hugging traction helps them play through any course conditions.

With bold prints, modern twists, and detailed designs, all eyes will be on golfers when they suit up in the UA Goin’ Under Golf Collection this season. The collection is now live on UA.com and can be found in select UA Brand Houses.

Properly Equipped Right From the Start: The Beginner Fitting at HIO

At what point does a golf club fitting make sense? Many golfers believe that they need to have a consistent swing in order to be able to carry out a meaningful fitting analysis. However, even beginners can definitely benefit from a suitable golf club, prevent incorrect loading and avoid learning the wrong technique, thereby even accelerating their sporting development – after all, nobody would think of starting cycling with a bicycle that is far too big. Depending on the golfer’s physical requirements and their long-term goals, the club set will be perfectly tailored to them. In very few cases is a complete set of 14 clubs necessary at the beginning. It is better to have fewer clubs in the bag, but the right ones. True to the motto: quality before quantity.

The right time for a golf club fitting?

At HIO Fitting, we are often asked whether it makes sense to have a fitting immediately after you are ready to play golf or if you only have a few months of playing experience. Many players are concerned that their technique will change a lot and that they have not yet had enough experience on golf rounds. At this point, our HIO fitters can reassure all golf beginners: The level of golf they have reached initially has nothing to do with their decision to have a fitting.

Every passionate golfer can have a fitting analysis and benefit from customized clubs! Golf beginners or players with an average handicap often benefit more from a fitting analysis than professionals, as they are usually already very familiar with their equipment anyway. Of course, a fitting for beginners is not as detailed as a fitting for a top amateur with a single-digit handicap or even a professional. The focus of the fitting is more on fundamental considerations, for example the right bag composition: Which clubs are really necessary at the moment and which should perhaps be added to the bag later?

How does a beginner fitting work?

  1. Discussion of golfing goals

The first step is to discuss our customers’ golfing goals: How many times a month will they go to the range or out for a round? What is the target handicap? Are coaching lessons planned for the future? Do they already have ball sports experience? Do you plan to take part in golf tournaments in the future? All these factors help us to assess where our customers will be heading in the next few years.

  1. Static measurement of the body

In the second step, we analyze the existing physical conditions. We are particularly interested in age, height, arm length, hand size, existing physical problems and many other parameters. This is the only way we can ensure that the club is built in such a way that our customers can learn the golf technique neutrally and in a natural position, thus avoiding possible incorrect strain.

  1. Analysis of swing & technique

Our customers then hit a few balls onto a screen and we take a look at the player’s technical fundamentals. A launch monitor is used to measure club head speed, ball speed, flight height, distance and the current tendency of the flight curve. In this way, potential patterns in a swing movement can be identified and unfavorable tendencies, e.g. a slice, can be mitigated with the help of an adapted club. This measurement of the status quo is very important, as the next step involves testing various club components and comparing the distance, dispersion and other parameters between the old and new material. We also store this data in our database with the customer’s consent, so that this data can be used as a comparative value for a second fitting a few years later.

  1. Recommendation for a club combination

In the final step, our HIO fitters recommend a sensible set of clubs. At the beginning, for example, you can start with a “half set”, in which only three to four different irons are initially placed in the bag. In most cases, a transport club, a hybrid and a fairway wood or driver for the tee shot are also useful. Add to this the putter – and with 7 or 8 clubs you have a decent set to really get started with golf! Of course, you can buy a full set at the start of your golf career, but only in the rarest of cases are all 14 permitted clubs really necessary.

The most important thing with a set of clubs for beginners is that the club type, club head width, shaft (graphite, carbon or steel shaft) and grip match the body angles and swing technique. This is where we benefit from all the data collected during the fitting process from testing various material combinations.

With a beginner’s set, our HIO fitters always take into account that missing clubs can be added after a certain period of time and the current clubs can be further adjusted. The irons and wedges in particular can always be adapted to the current swing by bending and adjusting the loft and lie angle. This means that the club set can “grow” with the player’s development and does not have to be replaced every year or with every significant handicap improvement. This also applies to the driver, whose loft is usually adjustable. So if a beginner golfer’s swing patterns change and improve, we can readjust the club so that it is always perfectly adapted to the player.

Our conclusion

A club fitting is also useful for beginners! Especially in the early stages, there are many opportunities to optimally prepare the golfer and their equipment for the upcoming swing developments. During starter fittings, our fitting customers receive a lot of useful information about golf clubs, swing technique and training tips in just a short time.

We would be delighted to welcome you to a starter fitting at HoleInOne Fitting in Munich! Come along and find the perfect equipment for your swing together with us!
