WITB: Tyrrell Hatton Wins with Ping in St. Andrews

For his third victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Tyrrell Hatton puts a mixture of popular Ping models from recent years and the current season in his bag. With the latest wedges and irons, he impresses on the fairways, from the tee he relies on the G430 series from last year. A look inside the Tour winner’s bag.

A Look Inside Tyrrell Hatton’s Bag at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Tyrrell Hatton relies on the latest woods and irons from Ping. The Englishman seems happy with the driver and woods from the G430 series and delivers first-class performances time and time again. The G430 LST driver has a slightly lower moment of inertia than the Max models and a smaller club head for less spin off the tee. As a fairway wood, Hatton then switches to the G430 Max versions to enjoy a little more forgiveness. As with the drivers, the face of the woods is designed with different thicknesses to compensate to a certain extent for miss-hits outside the sweet spot.

On the fairways and par 3s, Hatton then uses the Ping i230 irons from iron 3 to 6. The Players Distance irons are slightly wider in the sole and have a lower weight than the brand’s blades. Thanks to Mirco Grooves and a light cavity back, the irons still promise good trajectory control, which is always helpful for Scottish links golf. From the 7 iron to the pitching wedge, Hatton then uses the new Blueprint S irons from Ping. This classic cavity-back iron is said to have an improved sound compared to its predecessor and impress with its particularly high level of control.

Around the greens, Hatton uses the brand new wedges from Ping. The s159 wedges will succeed the Glide series in 2024 and impress with a mix of popular technologies and new innovations. Ping offers plenty of spin and different sole grinds. Hatton relies on the “S” grind, which offers plenty of bounce and versatility thanks to a heel and trail edge relief. On the green, the Englishman also uses a “vintage model”. The Ping Vault Oslo putter was first launched on the market in 2016 and, after some back and forth, still seems to be a favorite in Hatton’s bag. He uses the Titleist Pro V1x as his golf ball.

The Masters Tournament 2024: Tony Finau With Unusual Equipment Choice

When looking at Tony Finau’s golf bag, some long-established Masters Tournament fans might be reminded of an edition 18 years ago. Back then, in 2006, Phil Mickelson won his second green jacket at Augusta National. And he did so with a special set of clubs. Like Finau this year, “Lefty” relied on two drivers back then.

The reason behind Tony Finau’s unusual bag at the Masters Tournament 2024

The explanation for this “double lotto” in Finau’s bag is relatively simple. During his tournament preparation, the American realised that he could only use his 3-wood on a single hole (hole 8) and set about looking for an alternative. The solution presented itself in the form of a second driver. In addition to the Ping G430 LST with 7.75 degrees of loft, Finau will be adding another Ping G430 LST to his bag for the Masters Tournament 2024, but this one has around 9 degrees of loft and a shaft that is three-quarters of an inch shorter. According to Ping, Finau can use it for his tee shot on five holes (holes 2, 7, 10, 14 and 17). The driver is also more forgiving than the comparable 3-wood and even with the higher loft, the long hitter still manages 300 yards or 275 metres.

Putter patent for Tony Finau

Although not in his tournament bag, Tony Finau now uses a specially designed putter for training rounds at home. Together with his equipment supplier Ping, Finau has designed a prototype that fulfils his special requirements. The American relies on his putter particularly for short shots from the first cut around the greens and turns it 90 degrees for these shots so that he catches the ball with the heel. The new putter is said to have a cube shape, placing the weight directly behind the golf ball. The patent, which was presented on Wednesday ahead of the Masters Tournament 2024, features Finau himself as well as Tony Serrano, Head of Putter Design at Ping, and CEO John A. Solheim.

“When Tony turns his putter over and hits a putt with the toe, all the mass is directly behind the ball,” Serrano said. “So he came to us and said, ‘How can we make a putter that has some of these feelings and attributes and sounds that I get when I turn this putter over?’”

Based on the golf bags of the Golf Post community, we were able to identify the most popular clubs that our community is currently using on the golf course. We present you the most popular drivers. Golf Post community members particularly often go for Callaway or Titleist.

Callaway Big Bertha: By far at the top

The most popular driver in the Golf Post Community comes from the Callaway Big Bertha club series. The Big Bertha drivers are most often found in the bags of the Golf Post Community. With the latest model Callaway Big Bertha B21, golfers are offered support and help in every situation on the course. Above all, the driver combats the well-known slice and thus brings the golf game of higher handicappers to a better level overall. The driver impresses with its sporty, dynamic design and a colour combination of black, white and blue. In addition, the driver is also offered as a women’s model with the Callaway Big Bertha Reva.
However, not only the latest model of the Big Bertha series is found in many golf bags, but also the predecessor models enjoy particular popularity. This means that the Callaway Big Bertha drivers are used more than twice as often on the golf course in the Golf Post community as the second most popular driver models.

Ping G400 impresses with increased ball speed

The Ping G400 driver is the second most popular driver in the Golf Post community after the Big Bertha series. With the Ping G400, you get a driver model that focuses primarily on high ball speed. However, it is not only the driving distances that are increased with this model, but also the forgiveness on longer shots. The club head design is kept simple for the most part, so that only individual copper-coloured details stand out from the basic black colour. The colour of the shaft runs from copper to black and prevents any possible distraction at the address position. The model was released in 2017, but still offers a competitive driver for today.

Callaway Rogue: Inspiring versatility

The Callaway Rogue Driver is the second driver from Callaway in the top 3 most-used drivers and is only just behind the Ping G400. The Callaway Rogue includes three models that offer golfers of all levels the right driver. Basically, Callaway enables more power on drives and thus longer distances with this club series. In addition, the Callaway Rogue Sub Zero is offered, which is primarily intended for the experts among the golfers, as the model allows even more length, but at the same time also lowers the fault tolerance. On the other hand, the Callaway Rogue Draw suits the golf game of higher handicappers, who can benefit most from a more forgiving model.

Titleist 917 D2 and D3: A club for advanced players

Titleist also makes it with their 2016 Titleist 917 D2 and D3 drivers. The models are designed exclusively for advanced golfers. Both drivers are also forgiving, but mainly provide more power behind the ball and thus longer drives. The D2 has a comparatively higher ball launch and more spin and is generally intended for ambitious players. The D3 model, on the other hand, has a lower ball launch with less spin, which means that only the best players should use this driver.

Cobra King F9 Speedback: Speed, speed and more speed

Finishing just behind the Titleist model is the Cobra King F9 Speedback Driver. The model launched in 2019 brings exactly what is in the name. The speedback technology used, among other things, noticeably improves the driving distances. Cobra provides a suitable model depending on the level of play, including a children’s model as well as the Rickie Fowler edition, in which the shaft is slightly shorter. The design of the driver is particularly striking and consists of the colour combination yellow, red and black.
