Hall and Cowan excited to play in Jeddah as 2022 Aramco Team Series reaches conclusion

Star female golfers Georgia Hall and Olivia Cowan are in confident mood and excited to tee it up at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club this week in the final Aramco Team Series event of the year.
Hall returns to Jeddah following incredible recent success in King Abdullah Economic City after winning the Aramco Saudi Ladies International here in March, while Olivia Cowan is in the form of her career after winning her first Ladies European Tour title in the Hero Women’s Indian Open, two weeks ago.
Both are relishing the opportunity to be back in Saudi Arabia this week with Hall commenting: “I love coming back here. I really like this golf course; it is one of my favourites to play in my season and it is always in great condition. The weather is always good, and the wind can get up quite a bit in the afternoons which makes the course have a linksy feel which I really enjoy.
“There are some tough holes out there, but I can also reach pretty much every par 5 which is nice so that gives me some really good eagle opportunities and the chance to try and shoot some low rounds. Every time we come here as players, we also get really well looked after, so it’s just a really fun week.”

Olivia Cowan and Georgia Hall: “We are thrilled to be playing here”

Cowan echoed the sentiments of Hall and added: “I feel really confident about my game at the moment coming off the back of that first win in India. I’m just really looking forward to playing this course, I really love playing it and being back here in Jeddah. It’s challenging and fun to play in, and the team event makes it a bit more relaxing. I just love coming back here and can’t wait for the week to get going.”
The tournament draft took place last night where the teams for this week’s event were selected. Each of the 36 Captains have one individual pick, before they are allocated a random player at the draft, with the team element of the tournament being decided after day two of the event. Individual player scores are then carried over to the final day as an individual winner is crowned.
Hall will be joined in her team by young compatriot, Lily May Humphreys, as well as French golfer Anais Meyssonnier. Cowan used her pick to select young English star, Cara Gainer, while Team Cowan will be completed by another English player in Rachael Goodall.
Other standout teams are Team Charley Hull with the highest ranked player in the field, Hull, selecting Isabella Deilert, and being allocated Moroccan star Maha Haddioui, while Team Alison Lee will be completed by Camilla Lennarth and Diksha Dagar.
Defending individual champion Pia Babnik will be joined by Kristyna Napoleaova and Lauren Taylor for the first two days of competition as she looks to start her title defence in the best way. All teams will be completed by a championship amateur which differentiates the Aramco Team Series as unique and innovative and both Hall and Cowan believe golf’s global series as been an extremely welcome addition to the Ladies European Tour schedule.
Hall commented: “It is fantastic to get this support from Aramco and Golf Saudi and having the five events on the calendar of the Ladies European Tour has really boosted the Tour. I know speaking to a lot of players, they are really grateful for that support. “All the players just really enjoy coming to these events, it’s something different and just brings a different aspect to the game.”
Cowan emphasised Hall’s opinion adding: “The set up and everything they do for the players is amazing. The weeks are set up like a major and the Aramco Team Series puts a lot of effort into the event and looking after the players for the week. We really appreciate that and hope other companies continue to show the same support for growing women’s golf.”

England’s Georgia Hall delivered a measured final round 71 to win the $1million Aramco Saudi Ladies International presented by Public Investment Fund by five shots at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, on the Jeddah coast.

After being congratulated on the final green by Solheim Cup team member and good friend Emily Kristine Pedersen, a clearly delighted Hall showed how much the win – her first on the Ladies European Tour since her only other Tour victory, the 2018 Women’s Open – meant. “It’s fantastic to win in March, so early in the season,” said the world #25. “I really love this place and love the golf course. I was fine after 18, and then Emily started crying, and it made me cry. I was just really proud of the way I played today.”

Hall’s one-under-par round started with two birdies in the first three holes to extend her overnight lead to seven shots, from where she never really looked back. “That was the plan in my head,” said the 25-year-old. “The front nine is a little bit easier, a little bit less wind than we’ve had, so I tried to take advantage and hit some really good shots on the front nine to get me further ahead, and that kind of settled me.”

Despite four bogeys – on five, 10, 15 and 16 – the chasing pack never got closer than four shots. Hall – a runner up at the Aramco Saudi Ladies International in 2020 – sealed things with a birdie three on 17, rolling in a 15-foot putt. She continued: “Even on 16, I thought it was a pretty good shot. It just didn’t come back. It was so tough. It was windier than yesterday, and 15, 16 can be very tricky, so I tried a few damage limitations there. Obviously really happy with the birdie on 17.”

“To lead all week is very special. I think the first round really was very important for me. I played incredible that round. It really set me up for the rest of the week. Sometimes it’s not always easy with a five-shot lead into the last day, it’s a little bit more pressure on you, but I was really happy with the way I conducted myself today.”

Napoleaova an Gustavsson in joint second place

Joint second place went to the former Czech Republic international footballer cum LET rookie Kristyna Napoleaova, and Johanna Gustavsson of Sweden. It was fairy tale stuff for 25-year-old Napoleaova, who was competing in only her second event as an LET professional, and who had shared the Day Two lead with Hall. “To be honest, it’s kind of like a dream,” she said. “I didn’t expect even to get into the event. Golf Saudi provided me with an invite, which was incredible. What happened this week is like a fairy tale. It’s been an absolutely incredible week. I’m so grateful to have been here and can’t wait to come back again.”

Napoleaova picks up $75,000 USD, a cool $71,300 more than her maiden LET event. She said: “To be fair, I had no idea what the prize money is. I’m glad I didn’t look because then I would have been like slightly nervous on the last hole, which I was anyways, so better not to know!”

Kelly Whaley carded record-breaking round

The best round of the day came from breakout US golf star Kelly Whaley, who set a new Ladies European Tour record with an incredible eight birdies in a row, to finish joint sixth. The 24-year-old went -8 from the fourth hole through 11, en route to equaling Royal Greens’ course-record 63. It was the first time in history any player has bagged more than seven consecutive birdies in a regular season LET event.

Whaley – who turned pro in 2019 and was competing in her first ever event outside the States – said: “It is the best round I’ve ever had in a tournament. My whole goal today was to just enjoy it and have fun, being my first international professional event. I’ve never had eight birdies in a row. That’s something memorable for anyone!”

“Once I made about four or five, I said, ‘Okay, you’re in it now – you can’t stop!’. So, I just kept giving myself opportunities and it was a lot of fun. I think in these situations pressure can get to you, and it becomes almost daunting, but I really approached today trying to just enjoy every shot and find something about every hole that I loved, whether it be the view or just something else. It was just a really memorable day.”

Q. Georgia Hall, 69 here today in round one. You got off to a solid start starting your day on the back with four birdies, but some struggles coming in. What changed at the turn?

GEORGIA HALL: Yeah, I think the front nine, so it was my back nine, I think it’s playing a bit tougher actually, a bit longer with some tricky pins.

Yeah, I just got my two bogeys from two wedge shots, which was a little bit disappointing, and missing a seven foot on the last to go 3-under.

But I played really, really well. My long game was great. Probably one of the best it’s been all year, so I look forward to tomorrow.

Q. You’ve had three Top 10s this season. What would be a satisfying close as we get into the final stretch of the year?

GEORGIA HALL: Obviously I’d love to win this event. I mean, it’s a fantastic golf courses, one of the best we’ve played all year. I really look forward to playing it tomorrow.

But, yeah, I mean, I just have a really good week and play well.

Q. What will you work on now heading into round two?

GEORGIA HALL: I think a little bit of putting and then maybe a bit of chipping. Happy with my long game, so I think just focus my short game in a minute.

OLIVIA McMILLAN: We are lucky to be joined by the 2018 champion, Georgia Hall. Thank you so much for joining us, Georgia.

It’s been quite an exciting day here at the AIG Women’s Open with the big announcement that the prize fund for this year increasing to $5.8 million, followed by 6.$8 million next year. From a player’s perspective can you let us know what that means to the players as a group.

GEORGIA HALL: It’s phenomenal and fantastic to hear that and that it’s actually happening. Week-in, week-out, we want to play for big prize funds and it just recognises what an amazing event this is. To me, it’s the biggest event in women’s golf, and it’s great news for all our players.

Q. Saw you on the course this afternoon getting a feel for Carnoustie. What are you expecting from the course this week? Obviously it has quite a reputation?

GEORGIA HALL: Yeah, I mean, I played 18 holes today and it was a lot different golf course than yesterday, just based on the wind. I think every day is going to be different, and that’s what it should be, you know, British Open. I’m really excited to play. I haven’t played an event here in ten years, and yeah, I look forward to teeing it up tomorrow.

Q. And obviously you have the experience of winning The Open Championship. What would it mean to go and do that again at Carnoustie?

GEORGIA HALL: Yeah, it’s incredibly special to me, winning three years ago, and yeah, to win it again would be incredible, and it’s still my favorite event of the year. Yeah, I mean, I don’t really think about that. I’ll think about tomorrow first.

But obviously to be crowned champion again would be amazing and that’s definitely one of my goals.

Q. There’s such a strong contingent, yourself and Charley from England, flying the flag for England, as well. Are you expecting a successful week for you?

GEORGIA HALL: Yeah, I mean, I’m playing well coming into this week. I’ve had a run of a lot of golf but also good results. Also a lot of players especially from Britain, England, playing well and playing in this event and so hopefully we’ll have the home proud behind us.

Q. Just going back to 2018, do you remember kind of or if at all, do you know if the win changed you in any way, either as a player or in terms of your preparation or on the course?

GEORGIA HALL: I don’t think it changed me as a person. As a golfer, obviously having an Major Champion on your name is very special and I will have that the rest of my career. I think it changed that way. I got noticed more. Yeah, there’s more expectation, and winning in my home country, I got more known around England.

Q. Did it in any way increase pressure or the fact that more people are recognising you day-in and day-out?

GEORGIA HALL: I don’t like to put too much expectation on myself but it increased expectations from other people. But of course when you win a major, especially it’s my rookie year, more people would take a look at how I’m doing.

But I love the pressure that comes with winning, and after that, I felt very comfortable just going out there playing golf.

Q. Picking up on what you said at the top in terms of being asked about the increased prize fund with the Women’s Open, in terms of closing the gap to the men, do you think that the game, the women’s tour, is closing that gap slowly?

GEORGIA HALL: Yeah, it definitely is. You know, especially what the R&A and AIG have done for this event is just raising the bar for other events and companies to do the same and that’s what’s needed in women’s golf.

From a personal point of view, I’m really happy and proud to be associated with the R&A and AIG.

Q. Do you ever see a situation in your playing year where the gap is so close that the men’s and women’s tours sit side-by-side?

GEORGIA HALL: I really hope. So that would be incredible if that happened. But it all has to go in steps and this is a great step forward to making that happen.

OLIVIA McMILLAN: Georgia, I know that you’re really passionate about growing the game and you’ve spent a lot of time as the R&A Girls’ Golf Ambassador, and on Monday, you went out with a whole heap of excited children who won a ticket to the AIG Women’s Open. Can you comment about Monday’s experience and why junior golf is so important to you?

GEORGIA HALL: Yeah, it’s so important to of course growing the game and get more youngsters into golf in general. I think that’s incredibly important for the game. It’s really inspiring to me seeing so many youngsters turn up, and for me to give a tip that they can go home and start practising with, but it’s nice to be able to help inspire them.

Q. What’s your take an Nelly Korda, her achievement over the past few months and how good is it to have a big star, potentially maybe become a dominant force in the game? Is that a good thing for the game to help promote it?

GEORGIA HALL: Yeah, 100 per cent. The achievements she’s done this year is extraordinary. She’s quite a good friend of mine and it’s been really great to see her do so well, especially win a Gold Medal a couple weeks ago. It was really inspiring. I think she’s such a role model for the youngsters out there, very athletic and just a really down-to-earth, nice person.

So yeah, I think she’s done great.

Q. How long have you been mates?

GEORGIA HALL: I would say three years, kind of since I’ve been on Tour. We’ve shared together a few times obviously before COVID, so I got to know her pretty well.

OLIVIA McMILLAN: Georgia, thank you for being so generous with your time. We wish you the best of luck this week at the AIG Women’s Open.

Q. Welcome to the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open. You’ve been out and played your first 18 holes on the course how was it?

GEORGIA HALL: Really nice, not a lot of wind. I don’t think I’ve experienced it like proper yet but the conditions are really good. It looks like no one’s even played on it.

Q. What’s your sort of impressions, what kind of course is it? One you’re going to go for it, being patient?

GEORGIA HALL: I think there could be some drivable par 4s and on the weather, I mean, it depends what it is but I think it could be a fairly low-scoring course from what I’ve seen.

Q. And lots of risk and reward holes?

GEORGIA HALL: Yes. It depends what they do with the tees. There’s quite a few options which will really change a hole especially with the wind. There are definitely some risk/reward tee shots out there.

Q. And obviously you’re a girl that loves links, having won the women’s British Open on it, and this is a very important time of year for you. So coming in, is there an extra skip in your step?

GEORGIA HALL: Yeah, I’m so happy to be here and it feels like I’m at home and always my two favorites events of the year pretty much are these two, so I look forward to playing tomorrow.

Q. Looking at your results, it seems to be trending that you are doing your traditional-second-half-of-the-year-is-stronger. Do you feel good about your game and where you’re at?

GEORGIA HALL: Yeah, really good. I mean, since like week before KPMG, I finished sixth, good result at the Evian. I’m confident and relaxed going into the next few weeks.

Hall discusses not having her dad on the bag

Q. Playing at home is one of your favorite things to do but there is a big change for you in the fact that you don’t have your dad on the bag. Can you talk about that? We usually see him come out and shake off his smelly socks.

GEORGIA HALL: Harry caddied in The Open last year and he hasn’t done it for a couple years, but I think he’s more going to just watch now. Just, like, I don’t know, he’s coming next week, so it’s really nice for them to come and watch. I really enjoy that. At the end of the day, that’s what matters for me.

It would be nice for them to come and watch again because they haven’t been able to because of COVID. They watched one round in London at the team series event but since then I think it was Solheim at Gleneagles.

Q. Anything else you’re working on this week?

GEORGIA HALL: Not really. It’s just nice to have my own car and some comforts, especially you have to stay in the hotel, kind of thing. Nice to have British food.
