The Open Championship 2024 was the fourth and final major of the year for the stars of the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour this week. In Royal Troon, Xander Schauffele won the largest share of the record prize money totalling 15.6 million euros (17 million US dollars). The British Open prize money and its distribution at a glance.

The Open Championship 2024: The Record Prize Money at Royal Troon

This week, golf’s elite gathered at Royal Troon for The Open Championship 2024. At the last major of the year, the participants not only competed for the coveted Claret Jug and the title of ‘Champion Golfer of the Year’, but also for record prize money. Compared to last year, the amount has been increased by around 460,000 euros (500,000 USD), as announced by the R&A. CEO Martin Slumbers justified the decision, despite critical scrutiny, with the key role of The Open: “The R&A has a responsibility to strike a balance between maintaining The Open’s position in the global game, providing the funds required for governance and developing amateur and recreational golf in 146 countries internationally […]. “We remain concerned about the impact substantial increases in men’s professional prize money are having on the perception of the sport and its long-term financial sustainability. We are determined to act with the interests of the global game in mind as we pursue our goal of ensuring golf continues to thrive in 50 years’ time.” Of the 15.6 million euros (17 million USD), the winner will receive an impressive 2.84 million euros (3.1 million USD) in prize money. Incidentally, the prize money at The Open Championship 2024 is not paid out to amateurs; if more than 70 professional golfers make the cut, the prize money is also increased slightly. As usual, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and defending champion Brian Harman are among the favorites to win the Major. At Royal Troon, all eyes will be on McIlroy in particular after the Northern Irishman failed so dramatically at the 2024 US Open.

US Open 2024: DeChambeau Pockets Highest Major Prize Money Of All Time

The US Open 2024 at Pinehurst No. 2 is once again making a leap forward in terms of prize money, even surpassing the Masters Tournament in April. The stars shared a prize money pool of 21.5 million dollars this year. The increase of a further 1.5 million dollars compared to the previous year also raises the winner’s share from 3.6 million to 4.3 million dollars. In comparison, the Masters had prize money of 20 million, the PGA Championship “only” 18.5 million dollars.

The USGA About the New Purse

With over 10,000 golfers trying to qualify for the US Open, the USGA would like to give all players who made it into the 2024 US Open field at least a consolation prize, as is customary at the PGA Championship. “That got us to the 156 competitors in this field. Those competitors won’t be playing for $150 like 130 years ago, but they’ll be playing for $21.5 million, which means our winner’s purse will be a $4.3 million check to the winner. And as we always go $10,000 even, if you miss the cut because as I say every year, we really believe making the cut at the U.S. Open is about getting into the field, over 10,000 people playing for 156 spots,” Mike Whan said.

“I’ll be honest, we don’t sit in rooms and say, ‘How do we…’ We want to make sure that our purse matches how we feel about the rest of our championship, which is a life-changing difference in the game and I think we’re there and we’ll continue to monitor that,” Whan said.

“There’s probably some, if we went $1 million higher than some others, they’d just go a million and I’m not sure that’s the best answer, but I don’t think anybody who wins this week and walks away with $4.3 million, and quite frankly all of the other (things) that come with winning the US Open, is going to question whether or not that was an event that’s changing.

“We are proud of our purse. I’m proud of the fact that we as an organisation consistently ask ourselves whether or not we think we’ve got our purse right or TV right. All of those things have changed quite a bit in the last few years, and change is uncomfortable. But we’re not only keeping up with the times but hopefully at least in the landscape of majors in a lot of these cases, we’re leading and you guys can decide if that’s right or wrong, but that’s what we think.”

Rory McIlroy is one of the best-known players on the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. With several major titles and Ryder Cup appearences, he has earned a fair share of prize money. But exactly how much has the Northern Irishman earned in his career to date?

This is how much Rory McIlroy has earned in prize money in his career

Since becoming a professional player back in September 2007 Rory Since turning professional in September 2007, Rory McIlroy has quickly become one of the top golfers on both the European and American Tours. With good finishes, he started to make the big money in 2009 with his victory at the Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) and his first PGA Tour title in 2010 at the Quail Hollow Championship. He followed his success with four major titles in 2011, 2012 and 2014 and increased his winner’s share to almost ten million in 2012 and 2014. After a few years with “only” smaller earnings, he won his first Tour Championship and the Players Championship in 2019, bringing his prize money for the year to a whopping 20 million, surpassed only by his 22′ prize money, which totals 40 million dollars. With his second FedExCup win and top finishes in all four major championships, McIlroy climbed back to the top of both tours and won the DP World Tour season standings.

Rory McIlroy and the “Players Impact Program”

In addition to his tournament prize money, McIlroy collected a considerable sum from the “Players Impact Programme” introduced in 2021. A third place in 2021 earned him 3.5 million dollars, in 2022 a second place behind Tiger Woods earned him 12 million and in 2023 he received 15 million for his first place in the PGA Tours popularity rankings.

The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass is the most important tournament on the PGA Tour. Accordingly, the US Tour pays out the most prize money at the so-called “flagship tournament” in Florida. This year, the prize money is – once again – at a record level and significantly higher than the financial contributions of the majors. The Players Championship 2023 awards prize money of 25 million US dollars.

Players Championship prize money: PGA Tour draws level with LIV

This increases the purse by five million compared to the previous year, when Cameron Smith took home 3.6 million US dollars. In 2022, the prize money had already risen from 15 to 20 million. The PGA Tour saw itself forced to distribute significantly more prize money in the face of threatening competition from LIV Golf. The Players is one of the new Designated Events, which are endowed with an average of 20 million US dollars. As the flagship event, however, the “fifth major” stands out once again and draws level with the competition.

The tournaments of the LIV Golf League are also worth 25 million dollars each. One fifth of the prize money is intended for the team ranking of the Saudi League, the rest is paid to all 48 players in the individual ranking. At TPC Sawgrass, however, as usual only the 65 best and tied players who make the cut after two rounds will receive a share of the opulent prize money (see table below).

Fifth place earns seven figures

The winner of the Players Championship 2023 will walk away from Ponte Vedra Beach with a massive 4.5 million US dollars, while the runner-up will receive even more prize money (2.75 million) than, for example, Scottie Scheffler earned at the US Masters 2022. Even the fifth-placed player can be happy about more than one million US dollars.

By comparison, the major tournaments awarded significantly less prize money than the Players Championship or the new Designated Events in addition to the prestigious trophies last year. The US Masters 2022 offered 15 million US dollars, as did the PGA Championship 2022. The US Open 2022 gave the players a total of 17.5 million, the British Open 14 million US dollars. The prize money of the majors is typically only announced shortly before the respective tournaments. This year, the pots are likely to be bigger as well.

One week before the start of the British Open 2022 in St. Andrews, the prize money for the 150th edition of the tournament was announced. The winner of this year’s Open will be able to take home over two million pounds for the first time, in addition to the Claret Jug. The total prize money of the last major in the calendar year will be increased by 22 per cent.

In concrete terms, this means a jump from 12.5 to 14 million US dollars in prize money, with which the R&A, the organising association of the British Open 2022, wants to do justice to the increased prize money last year.

“There have been significant changes in prize money over the last year. We have therefore increased the prize fund by 22% which means that the prize money has increased by more than 60% since 2016,” Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A said.

Competitive bidding by the organisers

By comparison, the US Masters and PGA Championship had both increased prize money to $15 million before this year’s editions. The US Open is the men’s major with the highest prize money at 17.5 million dollars, winner Matt Fitzpatrick received over three million dollars. The Players Championship, the flagship tournament of the PGA Tour, paid out 20 million dollars this year and 25 million dollars next year.

The drastic price increase is probably also linked to the controversial LIV Golf Invitational Series, which lures stars to its tour with high sign-up bonuses and awards an additional 25 million dollars per tournament.

“We have made this substantial investment while balancing our wider commitments to developing golf at all levels around the world and to continuing to elevate the AIG Women’s Open.” Last year, the Association, together with the main sponsor, provided record prize money for the Women’s Major, which has since been surpassed by the US Women’s Open.
