US Open 2022: Matt Fitzpatrick and his caddie Billy Foster – An emotional win

It was probably the best Sunday in the life of the still young Matt Fitzpatrick. After an exciting final day, the Englishman beat his flight partner Will Zalatoris and Masters winner Scottie Scheffler to win the US Open 2022. For the 27-year-old, however, it is not the first title on this course, as he already won the US Amateur at the same venue in 2013. In addition, his caddie, Billy Foster, also had reason to celebrate after some forty years.

US Open 2022: Fitzpatrick still can’t believe his success

With the words “Yes and no. Actually no, I’d say yes,” Matt Fitzpatrick answered the question after his triumph at the US Open 2022 whether he had expected this outcome before the tournament. However, his caddie, Billy Foster, was convinced of the victory of his “protégé” early on: “Billy had been saying for a while, the time will come. You’re playing so well. Just keep doing what you’re doing. It will come. It will happen. It will happen”.

And indeed, that was the case on this weekend in June. The Englishman showed solid golf over four rounds, played, compared to his competitor Scheffler, not a single round over par and was therefore deservedly happy about his first major title in professional golf. Even if he was not convinced before the tournament that it could be enough for the victory in the end, his opinion changed after the Moving Day. He entered the final day as the leader, along with Will Zalatoris, and then had a good feeling: “I put myself in position after two rounds and then played well yesterday. I just really believed this could be the time. Yeah, for whatever reason, because of my success here before, it just felt like this was the time.” And even though Fitzpatrick said it was cliché, the triumph was exactly what he had always dreamed of as a kid.

Fitzpatrick’s caddie celebrates first major title in 40 years

Not only was Matt Fitzpatrick’s win at the US Open a premiere victory, but his caddie Billy Foster was also able to celebrate his first title at a major. The Englishman, who has accompanied numerous stars around the world’s golf courses, was finally able to celebrate a “big” title after more than 40 years. No wonder, then, that he kissed the flag on the 18th hole and, of course, took it home afterwards. In the social media, many were also happy for Foster.

“It means the world to Billy. I can’t tell you how much it means to Billy. It’s unbelievable. I know it’s something he’s wanted for a long, long, long time. To do it today is incredible” Fitzpatrick said about his caddie after winning the title. It could have turned out very differently, because the two guys only started working together by chance about four years ago: “We ended up working together. I was kind of in between caddies. He just split up with Lee, and just happened to work out. It’s so funny. He kept telling me the first time on the job, I’ll just do 25 weeks and maybe get a fill-in for the others. I think he’s had about two weeks off in four years, so yeah.” It’s a wonderful story that turned out to be an emotional victory for both of them.

Fitzpatrick enters the history books alongside Jack Nicklaus

It was a very special victory for Matt Fitzpatrick. On the one hand, the Englishman has not yet been able to celebrate a victory as a professional golfer, and on the other hand, it was not his first major victory at the Country Club in Brookline. In 2013, the then 18-year-old celebrated winning the US Amateur at the same venue. If he had been told at the time that he would be able to enjoy another title there 9 years later, but with a lot more competition and, above all, significantly more prize money, he would probably have just smiled wearily. However, the 27-year-old delivered and deserved to be the winner in the end.

In addition to the Major victory, Fitzpatrick is therefore also celebrating another triumph. Alongside Jack Nicklaus, he is the only player to succeed in winning the US Amateur and the US Open on the same golf course. While the golf legend celebrated in Pebble Beach in 1961 and 1972, Fitzpatrick achieved the same feat in 2013 and 2022 at the Country Club in Brookline. The Englishman was visibly moved when he realized this: “Any time you’re sharing a record with Jack Nicklaus, it’s unbelievable. So for me to have that as well is incredible” Nicklaus, who of course also followed the 2022 US Open, was one of Fitzpatrick’s first well-wishers. He passed on his congratulations to the Englishman by phone: “He called me up down there just at the presentation to congratulate me. Coming from someone like that, it means the world”.

In the women’s world, by the way, only one player managed this double success: Juli Inkster won in 1980 and 2002 at Prairie Dunes Country Club. No wonder, then, that the fans were on their best behavior during Fitzpatrick’s triumph. Especially on the 18th hole, they were almost unstoppable to cheer Fitzpatrick on. However, he and his caddie remained cool: ” It felt like Billy and me were going to get stampeded, but we didn’t. We’re fine. I love that. I love when the crowd is excited and loud. It’s what makes it more exciting.” Also, because Fitzpatrick is an avid soccer fan, he would enjoy such a raucous atmosphere in golf from time to time, “I love football, and I love the atmosphere in that. I know golf’s different, and it’s got to be all nice and calm and everything, but sometimes it’s good to be a bit different”.

Windfall at US Open 2022: USGA announces record prize money

The US Open is traditionally the major with the highest prize money. And it is set to remain so this year. After the US Masters and the PGA Championship gave a total of 15 million dollars to the top-ranked players this year, the US Open 2022 will go one better.

The US Open 2022 remains the most lucrative of the four majors

Last year, there was a total of $12.5 million in prize money at the US Open. Spaniard Jon Rahm also won $2.25 million of the total prize money with first place, the trophy and the glory. This year’s winner of the third major of the year can look forward to $3.15 million. This is 18 percent of the total prize money, which accordingly amounts to 17.5 million dollars. There is only one tournament in which there is even more money to be won: the Players Championship. Here, this year’s winner Cameron Smith won the record sum of 3.6 million dollars with a total prize money of 20 million dollars.

With these figures, the US Open remains the major with the highest prize money. The US Masters, as well as the PGA Championship, paid out a total of $15 million. Scottie Scheffler, winner of the Masters, and Justin Thomas, first-place finisher at the PGA Championship, each took home $2.7 million.

It remains questionable whether the increase is a reaction to the recently launched LIV Golf Invitational Series. Here, $25 million is paid out per tournament. Charl Schwartzel got $4 million for winning last week.

The distribution of the prize money

Of course, not only the prize money of the winner increases with the increase, but also that of the other players. Those who finish in the top 20 at the US Open 2022 have every reason to be happy: there will be at least $200,000 for all finishers in the top 20.

US Open 2022: Rory McIlroy takes out his frustration in the bunker

With a round of 67 and an interim shared lead at the 2022 US Open, Rory McIlroy actually has no reason to be particularly frustrated with his round. Nevertheless, the Northern Irishman gave free rein to his feelings in the meantime.

US Open 2022: Rory McIlroys aggressive bunker reaction

On hole 5, for example, where his tee shot landed on the edge of the bunker and the liberating shot strayed into the next bunker. But for a player of McIlroy’s caliber, that’s no problem either: he carried the ball onto the green and holed out for par. So did the bunker really deserve this reaction?

Woah ?pic.twitter.com/kSUgJ2dSwN — Golf Monthly (@GolfMonthly) June 16, 2022

“At the US Open, you’re faced with things you’re not faced with in any other week, whether it’s lies or things like that,” McIlroy said. “The thick rough of the course is on the edges of the bunkers. So I’ve been cursing the USGA.”

“You have to accept it. It didn’t seem like much work for Harry (Diamond, his caddy), so I gave the sand my opinion, and then I backed off and played a good bunker shot, and then it’s great to sink that hole.”

That wasn’t the only incident, however, in which McIlroy showed he’s hot to finish his majorless streak. On hole 9, McIlroy’s final hole that would end in a bogey, he clearly wasn’t satisfied as well and threw his club to the ground.

US Open 2022: Forbidden souvenir! Fans steal Rahm’s golf ball

Not an easy start for the Spanish defending champion at the US Open in Brookline, Massachusetts. On his first round, Jon Rahm experienced a veritable roller coaster ride over the 18 holes. Wild tee shots into deep rough, outstanding saves for a par save and long putts for birdie. It really was all there, and on top of that there was the scene on the 18th hole where Rahm missed the fairway again, but when he went for his ball, it was no longer in the place where it was initially spotted.

US Open 2022: Detective Rahm quickly spots the culprits

After the round, Rahm was asked about the incident on 18. The Spaniard visibly took the scene in stride, especially since he was awarded a free drop under the rules. Rahm also stated for the record that he saw the two offenders who took the ball on the court. Apparently, two younger fans had unceremoniously decided to take the ball from the former world number one.

“I’m pretty sure I know who did it,” he said, visibly amused. “I’m 100 percent sure I saw the two kids who stole it. The two of them were running in the opposite direction and had huge smiles on their faces.”

Lucky for Rahm and, of course, lucky for the two fans that the scene ended without disadvantage for the Spaniard. Quite the opposite, in fact. Rahm took advantage of the free drop, played the ensuing ball to the 18th green and holed the 20-foot putt for a birdie worth seeing. With this, Rahm moved up to a score of -1 for the day and is now tied for 14th place.

US Open withdraw: Tiger Woods gives his body “even more time”

The third major of the year will take place next week at the Country Club in Brookline. However, Tiger Woods will not be taking part in the US Open 2022. The 15-time major winner published a statement on Twitter in which he explained his decision.

Tiger Woods: “My body needs more time”

After his serious car accident in February 2021, Tiger Woods had taken a lot of time to get back on his feet. After holding on for four rounds at the Masters in April, he had to abandon the second major of the season after three rounds. At the PGA Championship, the 46-year-old’s strength was simply no longer enough. Now the superstar confirmed on his social media channels that he had decided against participating in the third major of the year. The reason: his continued less than optimal physical condition. In his statement, Woods explained that his “body needs more time to get stronger.” He has already informed the USGA of his decision.

Tiger Woods plans with the Open Championship 2022

The Open Championship will be held in Scotland from July 14 to 17. The fourth major of the season is also high on Tiger Woods’ agenda. In his statement on Twitter, he gives his fans hope: “I hope and plan to be ready to play in the Open next month. Looking forward to being back soon.” Back in April, Woods stated in an interview that he was already looking forward to St. Andrews: “It’s my favorite golf course in the world, so I’ll be there.” Whether he can actually compete there in July remains to be seen. In the end, he will have to listen to his body.

The return is near: Phil Mickelson about to make a comeback at the US Open 2022?

It was quiet around the six-time major winner for a long time. Phil Mickelson played his last official tournament at the end of January, when he failed to make the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. After his clear criticism of the PGA Tour, the American subsequently apologized for his statements and announced a break from golf. Since then, little has been heard from “Lefty”. Now, however, the bang for the buck: Phil Mickelson could make his return at the US Open in June.

List of contenders for the US Open raises hopes for Mickelson comeback

Many had probably expected a return of Phil Mickelson at the Masters. However, this assumption did not materialize and so the American missed the prestigious tournament at Augusta National Golf Club for the first time in 28 years and with it Scottie Scheffler’s triumph. In the run-up to the tournament, there were also rumors as to whether Mickelson had been disinvited or whether the American had voluntarily decided not to take part. The latter was confirmed afterwards.

Now, however, there seems to be some movement in his comeback plans, even if the information about this caused a little confusion. An article from golfmonthly.com reports about the list of applicants for the US Open on the homepage of the United States Golf Association. Phil Mickelson was also mentioned on this list. In the meantime, the aforementioned USGA website is no longer accessible. Accordingly, this is not yet a firm commitment, but there are many indications that Mickelson could participate in a tournament again in June.

The US Open takes place from June 16 to 19 at the Country Club in Brookline in the US state of Massachusetts and is the second oldest of the four Major tournaments. Last year, Jon Rahm became the first Spaniard to win the tournament there.

It remains to be seen who will have the best cards this year. Phil Mickelson will probably also be there. The American is only one victory away from a career Grand Slam at the US Open, as he has already won the other three majors. All the more reason for Mickelson to return to the golf course.

PGA Championship not yet an issue for Mickelson

Before the US Open takes place in June, the PGA Championship is still on the agenda for May. From May 19 to 22, the golfing elite will meet at Southern Hills Country Club for the second major of the year. It is still unclear whether Phil Mickelson will be taking part, as the American has neither confirmed nor cancelled his participation. Last year he won the title with a par on hole 18, but whether he can defend it this year is still questionable.
