Not all PGA Tour stars support Brooks Koepka’s upcoming return. One player shares mixed feelings of joy and frustration, criticizing the situation.
Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour has received both support and criticism. While Tiger Woods recently spoke positively about Koepka’s comeback, Wyndham Clark has expressed mixed feelings regarding the potential reintegration of LIV Golf players into the PGA Tour.
A PGA Tour Comeback with a Catch
Speaking on PGA Tour Sirius XM Radio, 2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark was not entirely enthusiastic about Koepka’s return. He finds himself torn between sporting respect, personal sympathy, and structural criticism of how the PGA Tour is handling players coming back from LIV Golf.
Clark said he would generally welcome Koepka’s comeback: “At the end of the day, a player like Brooks makes the Tour better.” He also acknowledged that he, as a player, could benefit from the return of a top competitor.
However, Clark also feels frustrated because Koepka profited financially from LIV Golf and is now allowed to return to the PGA Tour without the originally planned suspension due to a special exemption. For Clark, this is hard to accept, especially considering players who remained loyal to the Tour during challenging times and personal slumps.
Special Rules Equals Special Treatment?
Although Koepka must donate five million dollars to charity for his return and is excluded from bonus payments and sponsor exemptions to signature events, he can immediately compete on the PGA Tour again. Clark’s criticism is aimed at the lack of sporting and financial consequences. This initially gives him the impression that Koepka is enabled to benefit both sportingly and financially from LIV Golf and the PGA Tour simultaneously.
“I don’t know how I feel,” Clark said openly. “Maybe I would have expected more impact.” At the same time, he admits that the measures introduced are reasonable overall. He particularly appreciates the fixed deadline set for possible LIV returnees.
I want to thank my family and my team for their continued support throughout every step of my professional career. When I was a child, I always dreamed about competing on the @PGATOUR, and I am just as excited today to announce that I am returning to the PGA TOUR. Being closer to… pic.twitter.com/SEIehuZN7O
