TGL: Boston Common Golf Crushes The Bay Golf Club 9-1 in Record Victory

The Boston team continues its dominance in the second TGL season, securing the highest win so far and leading the standings. McIlroy and Thorbjörnsen shine while The Bay struggles with jetlag and penalties.

On Monday evening, Boston Common Golf impressively demonstrated its title ambitions at the SoFi Center. In Match 6 of the second TGL season, Rory McIlroy’s team swept The Bay Golf Club 9-1. This commanding victory moves Boston to an undefeated 2-0-0 and first place in the SoFi Cup Standings, tying with defending champions Atlanta Drive GC. For The Bay, the loss marks a tough season start with a 0-2-0 record.

Close Start Turns into Disaster

The match began evenly, tied 1-1 after two holes. However, long drives from Boston and penalty strokes suffered by The Bay defined the remainder of the match. The Bay lost four points after hitting penalty areas on holes 1, 5, 12, and 13. Particularly painful was losing their ‘Team Hole’ on hole 9 when Wyndham Clark missed a short birdie putt from approximately 1.5 meters, the first team hole loss of the TGL season.

McIlroy and Thorbjornson in Top Form at TGL

Boston Common Golf hitters kept impressing. Rory McIlroy broke multiple tee distance records, hitting 327 meters on hole 10, surpassing the previous hole record by nearly 15 meters, and setting a personal best at hole 4 with 326.5 meters. McIlroy praised his young teammate: \”Michael has been a fantastic addition to the team and adapted really, really well to this golf style.\” Michael Thorbjörnsen showed nerves of steel on the greens, improving his singles record to 3-0-1 with key moments including an eagle putt on hole 4 to halve the hole, a birdie on hole 12, and finishing the match with a nearly 5-meter eagle putt on hole 15. Thorbjörnsen commented: \”I’m just having fun. I’m not really thinking about whether a hole is worth two points… I’m just out here to enjoy and play good golf.\”

Frustration and Fatigue Hit The Bay

The evening was forgettable for The Bay Golf Club. Shane Lowry, visibly affected by travel fatigue, shared his state: \”I’m pretty tired… I spent 17 hours on a plane in the last 24 hours.\” Lowry summarized the team’s mood: \”It wasn’t great, right? We simply didn’t play well. We fell behind early… it felt most of the evening like we were in a bad position for some reason.\” Despite the loss, there was a silver lining: Wyndham Clark set a new TGL record on hole 6 with a massive drive close to 340 meters. Ultimately, the stats told the story; Boston won 9 holes, while The Bay took just one.
