Rory McIlroy Considers Major Iron Set Change in 2026

Rory McIlroy is testing new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Is he changing his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focused on maintaining his success in the coming year. The 36-year-old is trying out a new set of irons on the TGL tour, potentially marking another significant equipment change. Last year, he updated his driver and golf balls, and now the irons might follow.

TaylorMade P7CB Replacing Rors Proto

Since 2017, McIlroy has been using TaylorMade’s Rors Proto irons, but at the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4- to 6-irons to TaylorMade P7CBs. It seems he might continue with the rest of the set, as his TGL team recently shared a video where McIlroy said, ‘I’m testing a new iron set right now, which I’m really excited about.’

Shortly after the video, at the TGL opening match played at Boston Common Golf Club, McIlroy used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9 with Project X 7.0 shafts to secure a win against the Los Angeles Golf Club. The P7CB irons offer more forgiveness than his previous Rors Proto blades, giving him greater shot flexibility.

Whether this will be a permanent switch remains to be seen, but it would be a remarkable change for McIlroy, as it would mark the first time the five-time major champion has used anything other than blade irons in his set.

McIlroy’s Season Opener in Dubai

McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, providing further insight into his bag and iron choices for the new year.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods, first used at the HSBC Championship in November, are expected to remain in his bag for the upcoming season.
