Rory McIlroy Considers Major Iron Switch for 2026 Season

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons early in the year. Is he set to change his irons for the first time since 2017?

Following a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focused on maintaining his success into the next season. The 36-year-old is testing a new set of irons with TaylorMade at TGL. After changing his driver and golf balls last year, this could mark another significant shift in his equipment.

TaylorMade P7CB Replaces Rors Proto Irons

Since 2017, McIlroy has used TaylorMade Rors Proto irons. However, at the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4 to 6 irons to TaylorMade P7CBs. It now appears the rest of his irons may follow, as his TGL team released a video ahead of his game at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026. When asked “What are you currently working on?”, McIlroy responded, “I’m trying out a new set of irons, which I’m really excited about right now.”

Shortly after the video release, Boston Common played against Los Angeles Golf Club in McIlroy’s TGL season opener and won. McIlroy used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9, maintaining Project X 7.0 shafts. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto irons, providing greater shot flexibility.

Whether this will be a permanent switch remains to be seen, but it would be a significant change for the five-time major winner. It will be the first time McIlroy does not use blade irons in his set.

McIlroy to Kick Off Season in Dubai

McIlroy’s official season start is set for the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, where a clearer view of his bag and iron selection for the upcoming year will be revealed.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods are expected to stay in his bag, following their debut use at the HSBC Championship in November.
