22 top events after Super Bowl, Canter changes sides again, Nicklaus firm bankrupt, DeChambeau dines with Trump. The Back Nine.
Speculation is swirling following the first meetings of the PGA Tour’s new Future Competition Committee, chaired by Tiger Woods and tasked with reshaping the U.S. golf circuit. Harris English, who was sidelined by the Envelope Rule at the Ryder Cup despite being the nominal opponent for injured Viktor Hovland, stirred the pot ahead of the RSM Classic with some candid comments. According to English, the PGA Tour may shift its season start to after the Super Bowl beginning in 2027, in deference to the NFL’s media dominance in January and February. Notably, new PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp hails from the world of American football.
“In the future, starting maybe in 2027, all tournaments will be the same,” English said. “There will be no more Signature Events or regular events. There will be 20 or 22 events, all equal in points and prize money. All top players will play every event because skipping one won’t be an option.”
This shift would impact early-season tournaments like the Hawaii events, The American Express, Farmers Insurance Open, and the WM Phoenix Open, which coincides with Super Bowl weekend. A full-season overhaul would be necessary, potentially putting several prestigious events at risk.
PGA Tour 2027: NFL-Inspired Overhaul?
English’s revelations suggest a radical restructuring of the PGA Tour calendar. The move aims to avoid clashing with the NFL playoffs and capitalize on media attention post-Super Bowl. The proposed uniformity in events could foster consistent participation from top players, enhancing competitiveness and fan engagement.
