The Masters Tournament 2024: Rory McIlroy Struggles Against the Wind and Augusta

Rory McIlroy kept struggeling on day 2 at The Masters Tournament 2024. But in the windy conditions he was not the only one, with only eight players posting a round under par. Yet a round of 77 to follow his first round of 71 shots positions McIlroy only in the middle of the field on T35. Ten shots behind the leaders it doesn’t look likely that he will be able to fulfill his dream of a career grand slam, but McIlroy is well able to perform some golf magic.

Rory McIlroy having a hard time in round 2 of The Masters Tournament 2024

He couldn’t find that magic on Friday though with a birdie free round. Two bogeys on 5 and 7 marked an already difficult start to his round that only got worse when he entered Amen Corner. On hole 11 McIlroy’s second vanished into Rae’s Creek. And even though he brought his fourth shot seven feet to the hole a gave himself a chance to save a bogey, his ball rolled over the corner of the hole, causing a double bogey for the Northern Irishman. He got unscathed through 12 and 13 but lost another shot on 14. After that he made it without further lost shots to the clubhouse.

Rory McIlroy on his second round at The Masters Tournament: “Really Tough Day”

Q. Rory, can you give us your thoughts on the round and the conditions today.

RORY MCILROY: Tough day, really tough day. Just hard to make a score and just sort of trying to make as many pars as possible. I felt like I did okay. I made that bogey on 14, and even just to par the last four holes and get in the clubhouse and have a tee time tomorrow, I’m sort of pretty happy with.

Yeah, just a really tough day. Scoring was very difficult. Yeah, just one of those days that couldn’t — I mean, most of the field couldn’t really get anything going. It was just a matter of trying to hang in there as best you could.

Q. Could you give us your thoughts on just how long your round took today.

RORY MCILROY: It felt long, yeah. My golf swing felt horrific for the last six or seven holes, just from hitting around. Especially that 11th hole, 11 it felt like it took an hour to play that hole.

Yeah, it was stop and start, hard to get into a rhythm with the conditions and obviously how slow the play was as well.

Q. Rory, how much of a battle is it between your mental and your physical game when it’s so slow, when it’s so windy? There’s so many second callings of shots. What is that part of the test like?

RORY MCILROY: Yeah, it’s hard. Mentally it’s a grind because you just have to try to commit as best you can to the shot that you’re trying to play. One second you’ll have a shot that’s playing 150, and then if the wind does something different, the shot could be playing 180. It could be a 30-yard difference.

Just really hard to — you have to commit to trying to play the right shot, but then you also have to hit it at the right time as well. So pretty tricky.

Q. You’ve done 10 shots back in your career, Wells Fargo, it was a long time ago. I think you were 11 back with a whole round to go in 2022 and you finished second, gave it a run. Do you think there’s still a run from 10 back?

RORY MCILROY: I think so. I won from 10 back in Dubai at the start of the year. But obviously the Dubai Desert Classic and the Masters are two very different golf tournaments.

We’ll see. Hopefully the conditions are a little better tomorrow. Yeah, I still think I can go out tomorrow and shoot a low one, get back into red numbers, and have half a chance going into Sunday.

The Masters Tournament 2024 – Rules: Wind Moves Ball on Green

The wind made the second round of the Masters Tournament 2024 a real challenge. Leaves and pine needles were blown across the course and in some cases even the sand was blown out of the bunkers. But at least all the trees were still standing, unlike last year.

The Masters Tournament 2024: Wind moves the ball

The wind still had an impact on the game, however, with players repeatedly cancelling their shot attempts because the wind suddenly changed. However, it was particularly tricky for Gary Woodland. He was just about to putt on 16 when his ball suddenly developed a life of its own. The wind caused the ball to move on its own and roll across the green.

Gary Woodland’s ball just blew 40 feet away on 16 at the Masters!?pic.twitter.com/pdr5C5AMDJ — Flushing It (@flushingitgolf) April 12, 2024

What is to be done in such a case according to the Rules of Golf?

Rule 9.3 states: “If natural forces (such as wind or water) cause a player’s ball at rest to move there is no penalty, and the ball must be played from its new spot.”

But fortunately for Woodland, for whom this meant the difference between a putt from seven feet or a monster putt, there is an exception: “If the player’s ball on the putting green moves after the player had already lifted and replaced the ball on the spot from which it moved the ball must be replaced on its original spot.”

Even if the ball was unmarked at the time it started to move, this exception applied because Woodland had already marked and picked it up. This means that Woodland had to estimate where the ball had been and was allowed to play it from there.

He made the par on the 16th, but it couldn’t save him the cut. Woodland played a round of 81 and was seven strokes over par on the back nine alone.

The Masters Tournament 2024: Bryson DeChambeau or Jesus?

Bryson DeChambeau provided the most unusual image of the second day of the Masters Tournament 2024 when he suddenly carried one of the Augusta National Golf Club signposts over his shoulder. On hole 13, his tee shot had strayed into the trees. DeChambeau had to get the ball out of this awkward position, but one of the signposts guiding the patrons around the course was in his way. DeChambeau took matters into his own hand, put the signpost over his shoulder and moved it out of the way.

Bryson DeChambeau triggers Masters Tournament Meme

The social media reactions to this unusual sight were immediate. The most obvious association for many was Jesus carrying his cross.

“Augusta Jesus” was quickly read on the X platform (formerly Twitter). A “Messiah complex” was also attributed to DeChambeau or that he makes “birdies for our sins”. “Reuniting the game of golf is his cross to bear,” was another user wrote. The joke extended to even more complex “Bible quotes”:

Bryson DeChambeau probably won’t care about all that. He put his third shot on the green and made birdie. Mission accomplished.

The Masters Tournament: Tiger Woods throws ball to patron

Geting a ball from Tiger Woods? A dream for many golf fans. At the Masters Tournament 2024, this dream came true for a patron at Augusta National Golf Club, who seized the moment with a creative idea.

Tiger Woods had just finished his practice round when Matt Agonis, standing on the ninth hole, had a thought: “We were sitting there, it was quiet, I looked at him and thought to myself, ‘Why not?’ So I shouted at him ‘Tiger, I’m open’.”

Woods grinned, turned round and threw the ball straight to Agonis, who managed to catch it despite other patrons trying to get in the way.

The Masters Tournament 2024: Rickie Fowler Wins Par-3-Contest But The Kids Steal The Show

Unlike other tournaments, there is no pro-am at the Masters Tournament. Instead, the golfers traditionally get together with their families on the Wednesday before the Masters and play the short course at Augusta National in a par-3 contest. The result is not only moments of sporting celebration, such as the holes-in-one, of which there were five this year, but also sugar-sweet moments with the offspring. And sometimes both come together, as was the case for winner Rickie Fowler.

The Masters Tournament 2024: Rickie Fowler wins Par-3-Contest

“Great way to start the week”, Fowler said after his win. “The par-3 contest is something special. You know, tradition of the Masters and being able to go out there, and now being able to spend with it my family. Been around plenty of the little kids over the years but a little different when we have our own out there. So special way for us first time having my daughter with my wife and I, and something we’ll always have.

Fowler had the most fun watching his daughter Maya together with Sammy Spieth, Jordan Spieth’s eldest son. “They’re four days apart so they’re basically best friends. They spend a lot of time together.”

With five strokes under par, Fowler won the fun event, the winner of which is said to be cursed. In the history of the Par 3 Contest, there has never been a winner who has gone on to win the Masters Tournament.

So perhaps it was luck for Sepp Straka, who finished tied second and holed a hole-in-one on the way. Viktor Hovland, Gary Woodland, Lucas Glover and Luke List were also able to celebrate an ace.

Dakota Watson masters Masters greens

But it wasn’t just the professionals who set sporting records this year. Dakota Watson, the daughter of Masters Tournament winner Bubba Watson, has obviously learnt from her father and mastered the greens at Augusta National. She sank one long putt after another.

Frankie Fleetwood already has a good swing on him too.

While the Fleetwood scion is already a semi-pro, it was Crew Kopeka’s first time in the spotlight, and perhaps even his first holed putt.

Will Olympic Golf Get a Mixed Team Event?

The Olympic golf tournament could soon have a mixed tournament, according to a report by the Associated Press. A new format is close to being agreed on and could come into use at the 2028 Olympic Games in LA.

Olympic golf soon to be a mixed event?

The current format, which will also be used at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, only plans for two separate tournaments, one for men and one for women, each lasting four days. This has been the case since golf was reintroduced to the Olympic Games in 2016. However, since golf returned to the Olympics, there have also been calls for a more exciting format, for example as a team format, in order to be able to present the emotions that come to light at the Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup, for example, on the Olympic stage.

After the Grant Thornton Invitational, the first mixed event between the PGA and LPGA Tour since 1999, was met with great enthusiasm by players from both tours, there now seem to be considerations of introducing a similar team format at the Olympics in addition to the existing competitions. According to a source from the Associated Press, details such as the number of teams and the specific tournament format still need to be clarified before an official announcement is made.

The Masters Tournament 2024: Tiger Woods listed in field

The anticipation for the Masters Tournament 2024 is growing and it seems that we will also be able to look forward to Tiger Woods‘ next tournament start. The 48-year-old was recently added to the field of participants listed on the Masters website. As a former winner of the prestigious tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, Woods has a lifelong expemption to participate in the major tournament. He has won the Masters a total of five times, including his first major victory in 1997 and his last major victory to date in 2019 following his magnificent comeback from back surgery.

The Masters Tournament 2024: Tiger woods returns to the Augusta National

Tiger Woods last competed in the Genesis Invitational, which he hosted, but had to withdraw during the second round due to illness. At the Hero World Challenge in December 2023, he had announced that he planned to play more tournaments in 2024, ideally one a month, starting with Genesis. Tiger Woods skipped the Players Championship this year, but played the Seminole Pro-Member Tournament for the first time the week before.

Instead, Woods has been particularly active off the golf course and involved in the affairs of the newly formed PGA Tour Enterprises and negotiations with the PIF.

The Masters now appears to be the next big event on his schedule. Last year’s experience was not really positive. Woods made the cut but struggled badly with walking and withdrew in round 3 when the tournament was suspended due to weather chaos and it became clear he would have to complete 29 holes on Sunday.

With the exception of his illness at the Genesis Invitational, however, the 15-time major winner appears to be in better physical condition and more confident on his feet again.

The Masters Tournament 2024: Jon Rahm’s Champions Dinner with Spanish flair

When golf’s elite gather at Augusta National Golf Club in April for the 2024 Masters Tournament, Jon Rahm will have the honor of judging the former Masters winners at the Champions Dinner. The champions in green can expect a menu full of Spanish specialties, as announced by the defending champion and Augusta National.

The Masters Tournament 2024: Jon Rahms Champions Dinner

Rahm explained about his menu: “With the help of José Andres, the chef who I feel like needs no introduction for a lot of people, we made what would be a northern Spanish Basque country Bilbao menu and basically put in all of my favorites and even included a dish from my grandma. He called my grandma for the recipe. If somebody doesn’t like it, please just don’t tell me. Don’t tell anyone actually. It means a little bit too much to me to hear it.”

A selection of tapas and pinchos will be served as appetizers during the cocktail reception: Iberico ham, Idiazabal cheese with black truffle, tortilla de patatas (omelette with potatoes), chistorra sausage with potatoes, chicken croquettes and Mama Rahm’s traditional lentil stew.

The first course will consist of a Basque crab salad with potatoes, followed by a main course of either Basque ribeye steak with salad and piquillo peppers or pil-pil style turbot with white asparagus.

Rahm had already decided on the dessert last summer: milhojas. “The translation from Spanish would be 1,000 leaves”, he explained. “It’s basically a puff pastry with custard and just very little layers. It was basically Kelley and I’s wedding cake. It varies a little bit where you’re doing it in Spain, but it’s absolutely one of my favorites.”

“Then with the wine selection, we have a Basque white wine from Vizcaya which is called Txakoli. It’s not regular white wine. It’s a little bit drier. Then the red wine, it’s called Imperial. It’s pretty much the same — actually I can do you a favor and show you right here. That’s the name right there. Definitely a different year, obviously.”
