Two tournaments, two winners, and two completely different bags. Scottie Scheffler and Patrick Reed show that success in golf comes in many forms.
Although both Americans and Texas high school golf alumni, two-time tour winners Patrick Reed, who claimed the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour, and Scottie Scheffler, world number one on the PGA Tour shining at the American Express, have very different club setups.
From the tee, 20-time PGA Tour winner Scottie Scheffler from New Jersey trusts a new partner: the TaylorMade Qi4D driver, replacing his two-year success with the Qi10. The new driver features an aerodynamically optimized head and innovative carbon face technology enhancing forgiveness on off-center hits; it’s currently tested by pros and will be available from late January 2026.
Patrick Reed, originally from San Antonio, Texas, switched drivers in mid-2024 from Ping to the Titleist GT3, which offers adjustable weight for precise swing fitting. Reed praised its ability to generate speed and straighter shots even on imperfect hits.
Fairway Woods: Brand Unity, Detail Differences
Both Americans favor TaylorMade fairway woods. Reed uses TaylorMade Qi35 with a 15° 3-wood, while Scheffler opts for the tried Qi10 at 15° and the newer Qi4D 7-wood at 21°. Reed also integrates a 2016 Titleist 716 T-MB Utility iron variably, alongside a Callaway Apex Pro Hybrid at 18°.
Muscle Back vs. Custom Design: Iron Sets Compared
Both carry a 4-iron: Scheffler with Srixon’s ZU85, Reed with Grindworks PR-202. Scheffler’s 5-PW irons are TaylorMade P7TW, co-developed with Tiger Woods, designed for precision, feel, and control. Reed sticks to Grindworks’ custom PR-101A irons, created to counter a left spin issue he discovered on the range.
Reed’s renowned short game blends Titleist and Cleveland wedges: Cleveland RTX6 Tour Rack (52°), Titleist Vokey SM10 (56° and 60°) with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts. Scheffler also relies on Titleist Vokey wedges with similar lofts and shafts.
WITB: Mallet vs. Classic Blade Putter
Scheffler uses the TaylorMade Spider Tour X mallet putter, popular on the PGA Tour and used by Rory McIlroy. Reed played a Scotty Cameron Tour Rat 1.5 Proto in Dubai, favoring a classic blade style, which is becoming rarer as mallet putters gain popularity.
Both players use Titleist golf balls: Scheffler the Pro V1 and Reed the Pro V1x—a higher-flying, higher-spin model with a firmer feel—while the Pro V1 offers a mid-flight, softer feel with less spin.
