Rory McIlroy Considers Major Change with New TaylorMade Irons in 2026

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons to start the year. Will he change his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?After a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focused on maintaining his success in the year ahead. The 36-year-old is testing a new set of irons with TaylorMade at the TGL. Having changed his driver and golf balls last year, a significant adjustment to his irons may be next.

TaylorMade P7CB Replaces Rors Proto

Since 2017, McIlroy has used the TaylorMade Rors Proto irons. However, at the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4 to 6 irons to TaylorMade P7CBs. It appears the rest of the set may follow. Ahead of his play at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026, his TGL team released a video where McIlroy was asked, ‘What is the main thing you are working on right now?’ The 36-year-old replied, ‘I’m currently testing a new set of irons that I’m very excited about.’

Shortly after the video release, Boston Common played its TGL season opener against the Los Angeles Golf Club and won, with McIlroy using TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9 and staying with Project X 7.0 shafts. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto clubs and offer him greater margin for error.

Whether this will be a permanent switch remains to be seen, but it would mark a significant change for McIlroy. It would be the first time the five-time major winner includes no blade irons in his set.

Rory McIlroy’s Season Debut in Dubai

McIlroy will officially start his 2026 season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, providing more insight into his bag and iron choices for the year. His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods are expected to remain in his bag, having been introduced at the HSBC Championship in November.
