Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Could he switch his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?
Following a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focused on maintaining his success into the next season. The 36-year-old is testing a new set of irons with TGL, potentially signaling a significant change in his equipment after having updated his driver and golf balls last year.
TaylorMade P7CB Replaces Rors Proto Irons
Since 2017, McIlroy has used TaylorMade Rors Proto irons, but at the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4 to 6 irons to TaylorMade P7CBs. It appears the rest of his irons may follow suit, as a TGL video released before his match at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026 showed McIlroy stating he is excited about testing a new iron set.
Shortly after the video, McIlroy played at Boston Common in a TGL opening match against the Los Angeles Golf Club, winning with TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9, still using the Project X 7.0 shafts. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto blades, giving him more shot flexibility.
Whether this will be a permanent change remains to be seen, but it would mark the first time the five-time major champion uses more forgiving irons instead of blade-style clubs.
McIlroy to Start 2026 Season in Dubai
McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, which will provide further insight into his bag and iron choices for the upcoming year.
His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods, first used at the HSBC Championship in November, appear set to remain in his bag for 2026.
