Rory McIlroy Considers Major Iron Set Change in New Season

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Will he switch his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is now focused on making the coming year just as successful. A change might be on the horizon for the 36-year-old regarding his choice of clubs, as he is testing a new set of irons on the TGL. Last year, he already changed his driver and golf balls, and now a significant change may follow.

TaylorMade P7CB Replaces Rors Proto

Since 2017, McIlroy has been using the TaylorMade Rors Proto irons, but during the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4 to 6 irons to TaylorMade P7CB models. It now appears that the rest of the set is following suit. Before his play at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026, his TGL team released a video where McIlroy was asked, ‘What is the most important thing you are currently working on?’ The 36-year-old replied, ‘I am currently testing a new iron set, which I am very excited about.’

Shortly after the video was published, Boston Common played its TGL debut match against Los Angeles Golf Club and won. McIlroy used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9, keeping Project X 7.0 shafts. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto clubs, offering more leeway in his shots.

Whether this will be a permanent switch to the P7CB irons remains to be seen, but it would be a significant change for McIlroy. It will mark the first time the five-time major winner uses no blade irons in his set.

McIlroy’s Season Opener in Dubai

McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, which will provide deeper insight into his bag and iron selection for the year ahead.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods appear set to remain in his bag for the coming year as well, after first being used at the HSBC Championship in November.
