Rory McIlroy Considers Major Change with New TaylorMade Irons

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Is he changing his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After an outstanding 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focusing on keeping the momentum going into the new year. The 36-year-old may make a significant change in his equipment as he tests a new set of irons with TaylorMade at the TGL. Having already switched his driver and golf balls in the past year, this could be the next big update.

TaylorMade P7CB Replaces Rors Proto Irons

Since 2017, McIlroy used the TaylorMade Rors Proto irons. However, at the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4 to 6 irons to TaylorMade P7CBs. Now it appears he might complete the transition, as before his match at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026, his TGL team shared a video where McIlroy was asked what he is currently focusing on. He replied, ‘I’m trying out a new iron set, which I’m really excited about.’

Shortly after the video, Boston Common won their TGL opener against the Los Angeles Golf Club with McIlroy using TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9, keeping the Project X 7.0 shafts. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto blades, offering more leeway in his shots.

Whether this will be a permanent switch remains to be seen, but it would be a significant change for McIlroy, marking the first time the five-time major champion uses non-blade irons in his set.

Rory McIlroy to Make Dubai Season Debut

McIlroy’s official season start is set for the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, which will provide further insight into his bag and iron choices for the coming year.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods appear likely to remain part of his bag, having debuted them at the HSBC Championship in November.
