Woods’ Career at 50: New Chapter with Challenges for Tiger and the Tours

Where does the GOAT go next? PGA Tour? PGA Tour Champions? Majors and Senior Majors? Many questions remain, and it’s complicated.

Quo vadis, Tiger? This question has been asked almost every year since 2009 when his extramarital affairs became public. In 2014, after enjoying a brief return to form, his physically challenged back sidelined him. In 2019, with a triumphant fifth Masters and 15th Major win, he proved the doubters wrong who claimed ‘‘They never come back.’’

The turning point was February 23, 2021, when Woods survived a severe car accident in California that almost cost him his right lower leg and foot, derailing his playing career. Now 50 years old, born December 30, 1975, in Long Beach, California, Woods is officially eligible to compete on the PGA Tour Champions, the over-50 circuit where he can ride a cart without special permissions.

Woods’ Eligibility and the State of PGA Tour Champions

Woods’ addition to the seniors’ circuit is expected to be a major boost as a ratings and fan draw, vital for television and sponsorship interest. However, the PGA Tour Champions is facing financial challenges, including a two-million-dollar cut to its pension fund and lacking a TV partner, with weekly tournament broadcast costs of $800,000. The circuit is now run by Brian Rolapp, a pragmatic ex-American football executive, focused on commercial interests.

\”It would be exciting to see Tiger play on the Champions Tour, and I believe he will compete in several events. He is a fascinating personality, and it would be fantastic for Tiger and our tour. I think all players would welcome him,\”

Preparations and Complications for Tiger’s Comeback

Miller Brady, PGA Tour Champions president, assured that preparations for Tiger’s appearances are in place—from security to facilities. Yet, complications remain. The hope is simply for Tiger to recover and play golf again. The regular PGA Tour will likely want to retain Woods’ presence, limiting the seniors’ circulation of his appeal, as those events compete for media attention.

Woods recently signed as a brand ambassador for Insperity, title sponsor of the Insperity Invitational over-50 event in Texas, coinciding with the Truist Championship on the PGA Tour in North Carolina. Such scheduling conflicts create tension, especially amid LIV Golf’s parallel events.

\”As a friend of Tiger, I would be delighted if he competed and had fun with us. It’s clear Tiger would be a tremendous asset to the Champions Tour, drawing many fans who want to watch us enjoy golf,\”

Darren Clarke

While Tiger’s sponsorship does not require active competition, any public appearances or clinics would attract significant attention, potentially shifting media focus dramatically.

Focus on Senior Majors and Challenges Ahead

Woods is likely to target senior majors, including the US Senior Open, aiming
