The Open 2025 boosts Northern Ireland economy with £280 million impact

The Open Championship 2025 generated a record £280 million for Northern Ireland, nearly doubling the 2019 impact.

Royal Portrush, one of the younger links courses in the UK since its opening in 1888, hosted The Open Championship for the third time in Northern Ireland. The event brought a significant economic boost, generating approximately £280 million, according to a study conducted by The R&A, Tourism Northern Ireland, and the Sports Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University.

The study revealed that the Causeway Coast and Glens region alone benefited from a £43.7 million economic uplift. The global reach of the historic Major contributed an estimated £191 million in destination marketing value through TV, online, and social media exposure, according to YouGov. Compared to the 2019 edition, the 2025 figures nearly doubled, with a 67% increase in regional economic benefit. This growth was attributed to higher visitor numbers and spending, with over half of attendees coming from outside Northern Ireland and opting for commercial accommodations. Notably, 80% of visitors were attending The Open for the first time.

R&A and Tourism Northern Ireland highlight positive impact

Mark Darbon, CEO of The R&A, emphasized the tournament’s value: “As one of the world’s biggest sporting events, The Open promotes tourism, generates significant additional revenue for local businesses and communities, and attracts an international audience to see the world’s best golfers compete at premier venues.” Aine Kearney of Tourism Northern Ireland echoed the sentiment, noting that bars, restaurants, and accommodations saw £89 million in direct economic benefits. She added that the event led to a noticeable increase in hotel capacity, creating jobs and enhancing the visitor experience, while also boosting local pride in hosting the 153rd edition of The Open.

Approximately 278,000 spectators traveled to County Antrim for the 153rd Open Championship, a region with a population of around 650,000. Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital, also located in the county, is home to over 350,000 residents. The next Open Championship will be held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club from July 16–19, 2026, near Southport on England’s northwest coast.

Marketing through heritage and tradition

Brand marketing was also evident through sponsorships. Scottish whisky maker Loch Lomond, acquired by a Chinese investment firm in 2019, has sponsored The Open since 2018. The partnership is rooted in shared values of heritage, craftsmanship, tradition, and passion—qualities that define both golf and whisky in the UK, particularly Scotland. Each year, Loch Lomond releases special whisky editions to celebrate its connection with the championship.
