Atlanta Drive GC wins an exciting TGL match 7-4 against The Bay GC, remaining undefeated this season.
Before the third match of the new TGL season, roles were clearly defined: defending champion Atlanta Drive GC arrived at the SoFi Center with an opening victory, while The Bay Golf Club was playing its first game of the season. After 15 holes, the final score was 7-4. The decisive lead came mainly from the singles format, where Atlanta, led by Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay, and substitute Chris Gotterup, secured four of six possible points. After an even start, Atlanta pulled ahead from hole 11 onwards. “We come in here, train, play our game – it fits,” said Horschel. Despite the absence of the injured Justin Thomas, the team’s depth shows as they claimed their ninth win in the last ten TGL matches, an impressive record.
TGL: Gotterup Brings Atlanta Back into Play
For the second consecutive time, Chris Gotterup appeared on the scoreboard for Atlanta as a key player. After a scoreless start on hole 1, he put Atlanta ahead with a par putt from nearly nine feet on hole 2. The Bay responded immediately with hammer use on the next holes, taking a 2-1 lead. The first significant momentum shift came at hole 6, called “Alpine.” After The Bay had leveled the score, Gotterup chipped in for an eagle, bringing Atlanta back on par. Even without The Bay using their hammer, the emotional effect was clear: tie. “I try to read as much as possible on the greens – it’s not easy with all the lights,” Gotterup later said. “But when you make putts like that, you know what to expect.”
