TGL Golf Stars Share Their New Year’s Resolutions Ahead of Season

At the turn of the year, TGL reveals the New Year’s resolutions of its star players before their match day.

Entering its second season, the TGL continues its innovative approach: six teams of four PGA Tour top players each compete in a 3-versus-3 format. Matches are held indoors at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, a nearly 250,000 square-foot high-tech arena seating around 1,600 spectators. Rather than traditional 18-hole rounds, each match consists of 15 holes split into two segments: nine holes played in alternate shot format (‘Triples’) and six holes in direct head-to-head play (‘Singles’). The season features five regular matches per team, followed by playoffs including semifinals and a best-of-three final. Points are awarded following the NHL model, including overtime bonuses.

New Year’s Resolutions and Reflections from TGL Players

This unique setting brings familiar faces together, and at the season’s start, TGL offers insights into their players’ New Year’s resolutions, ranging from small personal goals to profound ambitions. Chris Gotterup approached it practically: he aims to brew coffee at home instead of visiting Starbucks or Dunkin’ each morning. The coffee machine is set up; only the operation remains.

Billy Horschel took a broader approach, aspiring to be a better version of himself, especially off the golf course.

Xander Schauffele’s No-Resolution Stance

Xander Schauffele kept it brief: “I don’t do that. I’m just me,” he said dryly, embodying the type who shuns the show. Horschel was impressed, joking, “We’d all like to be Xander.” Schauffele replied calmly, “I don’t know… maybe you’d be happier.”

Michael Thorbjornsen had a clear wish: to play more tournaments with Collin Morikawa, who liked the idea but had no resolution himself yet. Sahith Theegala kept it simple: “Stay healthy. Don’t play badly.” Justin Rose recalled resolutions that didn’t work in previous years and vowed to do better: “No more years where I don’t keep my resolutions.”
