McIlroy Clinches First TGL Victory with Boston Common Golf

Boston Common Golf ends its winless streak in the TGL with an eagle on the final hole against Los Angeles Golf Club.

Rory McIlroy and his team Boston Common Golf shined on Saturday at the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL) at the SoFi Center in Palm Gardens Beach, Florida, securing a first victory against the Los Angeles Golf Club. In the previous season, Boston Common Golf had not won a single TGL matchup, finally breaking the streak. Alongside McIlroy, the winning team included American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Michael Thorbjörnsen, who substituted for Australian Adam Scott and Japanese Hideki Matsuyama, both absent due to scheduling conflicts. The Los Angeles Golf Club also featured prominent players: Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, and Sahith Theegala represented the Californian team.

TGL: Thorbjörnsen Decides Thriller with Eagle Putt

Only on the final hole did TGL rookie Michael Thorbjörnsen clinch the close duel with a 4.5-meter eagle putt, securing a 7:5 win for Boston Common Golf. Rory McIlroy commented: \”It took a long time for Keegan and me to finally win again,\” adding, \”Many great shots, birdies and eagles, but also risky putts and close mistakes. It was back and forth, definitely fun to play.\”

The match started with nine holes in the triple format, resulting in an exciting 4:4 tie with six birdies and two eagles across seven holes. At the 8th hole, Boston Common Golf gained two points through a hammer throw accepted by Los Angeles Golf Club and a resulting birdie, tactically overcoming a one-point deficit. The point gained by the Los Angeles Golf Club on the last triple hole posed no real threat afterward.

In the singles, the duel was initially balanced until Boston Common Golf took the lead starting at the 12th hole with an eagle putt by Michael Thorbjörnsen. The next two holes ended in draws despite hammer throws, leaving the score at 6:5 before the final hole. Though a draw was still possible, the 24-year-old Thorbjörnsen confidently sank the final putt for eagle, sealing the win.

Thorbjörnsen also became the first TGL player to sink four putts from over three meters in a single match, closing the gap to his teammates and Ryder Cup opponents McIlroy and Keegan Bradley and playing a key role in the team’s complete victory on the Palm Beach State College campus.
