McIlroy Celebrates First TGL Victory with Boston Common Golf

Boston Common Golf ends its losing streak in the TGL with an eagle on the final hole to beat Los Angeles Golf Club.

Rory McIlroy and his team Boston Common Golf shined for the first time on Saturday at the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL) event at the SoFi Center in Palm Gardens Beach, Florida, defeating the Los Angeles Golf Club. After failing to win any match last season, Boston Common Golf finally broke their curse. Alongside McIlroy, the winning team included American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Michael Thorbjörnsen, who stepped in for Australian Adam Scott and Japanese Hideki Matsuyama, both unable to participate due to scheduling conflicts. The Los Angeles Golf Club fielded notable players as well: Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, and Sahith Theegala represented the California team.

TGL: Thorbjörnsen Decides Thriller with Eagle Putt

TGL rookie Michael Thorbjörnsen clinched the tight match with a 4.5-meter eagle putt on the final hole securing a 7-5 victory for Boston Common Golf. Rory McIlroy commented, \”It took a long time for Keegan and me to finally win again,\” adding, \”There were many great shots, many birdies and eagles, but also risky putts and close mistakes. It went back and forth. Definitely fun to play.\”

The match began with nine holes in the triple format, resulting in a 4-4 tie with six birdies, two eagles, and points on seven holes. On the 8th hole, Boston Common Golf gained two points through a hammer throw accepted by the Los Angeles Golf Club, leading to a strategic comeback from a one-point deficit. The Los Angeles Golf Club’s late triple format point was no longer threatening.

In the singles, the match was initially even until Thorbjörnsen’s eagle putt on hole 12 put Boston Common Golf ahead. The following two holes ended tied despite hammer throws, leaving the score 6-5 before the final hole. With a draw still possible, 24-year-old Thorbjörnsen confidently sank the last putt for eagle and sealed the win.

Thorbjörnsen also became the first TGL player to make four putts from over three meters in a single match, closing the gap to teammates and Ryder Cup rivals McIlroy and Bradley and playing a crucial role in the comprehensive team victory at Palm Beach State College campus.

Hammer Strategy as Key to Success

Boston Common Golf secured their success thanks to a targeted hammer strategy that earned three extra points. \”Our approach to accepting and throwing hammers is somewhat different. We rely more
