McIlroy and Boston Common Golf Secure First Victory in TGL with Last-Hole Eagle

Boston Common Golf ends its losing streak in TGL – a last-hole eagle decides the duel against Los Angeles Golf Club.

Rory McIlroy and his team Boston Common Golf shone on Saturday at the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL) at the SoFi Center in Palm Gardens Beach, Florida, competing against the Los Angeles Golf Club. In the previous season, Boston Common Golf had not won a single TGL match but finally broke this curse. Alongside McIlroy, the victorious team included American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Michael Thorbjörnsen, who stepped in as a substitute for Australian Adam Scott and Japanese Hideki Matsuyama, both absent due to scheduling conflicts. The Los Angeles Golf Club also featured prominent players: Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, and Sahith Theegala represented the California-based team.

TGL: Thorbjörnsen Decides Thrilling Match with Eagle Putt

It was only on the final hole that TGL rookie Michael Thorbjörnsen clinched the close contest with a 4.5-meter eagle putt, securing a 7:5 win for Boston Common Golf. Rory McIlroy commented, \”It’s been a long time coming before Keegan and I finally won again,\” adding, \”Many great shots, many birdies and eagles, but also risky putts and close mistakes. It was back and forth. Definitely a lot of fun to play.\”

The duel started with nine holes in triple format, featuring six birdies, two eagles, and scoring on seven holes, leading to a 4:4 tie. On the 8th hole, Boston Common Golf secured two points through a hammer throw accepted by the Los Angeles Golf Club, resulting in a strategic birdie that overcame a one-point deficit. The Los Angeles Golf Club’s point on the last triple hole did not change the standing.

The singles matches began evenly, until Boston Common Golf took the lead from the 12th hole with an eagle putt by Thorbjörnsen. The following two holes ended in draws despite hammer throws, setting the score at 6:5 before the last hole. Although a draw was still possible, the 24-year-old Thorbjörnsen confidently sunk the final putt for eagle, sealing the victory.

Thorbjörnsen was also the first TGL player to sink four putts from over three meters in a single match, closing the gap to his teammates and Ryder Cup rivals McIlroy and Keegan Bradley, greatly contributing to the team’s complete victory at the Palm Beach State College campus.
