McIlroy Celebrates First TGL Victory with Boston Common Golf

Boston Common Golf ends its losing streak in the TGL with an eagle on the final hole against Los Angeles Golf Club.

Rory McIlroy and his team Boston Common Golf shined on Saturday at the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL) at the SoFi Center in Palm Gardens Beach, Florida, against the Los Angeles Golf Club. In the previous season, Boston Common Golf had failed to secure a single victory in any TGL match, finally breaking that streak. Alongside McIlroy, the winning team included American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Michael Thorbjörnsen, who filled in for Australian Adam Scott and Japanese Hideki Matsuyama, both absent due to scheduling conflicts. The Los Angeles Golf Club also featured prominent players: Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, and Sahith Theegala represented the Californian team.

TGL: Thorbjörnsen Decides Thriller with Eagle Putt

Only on the last hole could TGL rookie Michael Thorbjörnsen secure the close match with a 4.5-meter eagle putt, granting Boston Common Golf a 7-5 victory. Rory McIlroy commented, \”It took a long time for Keegan and me to finally win again,\” adding, \”Many great shots, lots of birdies and eagles, but also risky putts and close mistakes. It was back and forth. Definitely fun to play.\”

The match began again with nine holes in the triple format, featuring six birdies, two eagles, and points on seven holes resulting in a 4-4 tie. On the 8th hole, Boston Common Golf earned two points through a hammer throw accepted by Los Angeles Golf Club and a resulting birdie, tactically erasing the one-point deficit. Even the Los Angeles Golf Club’s point on the final hole of the triples no longer posed a threat.

The singles matches started evenly, but Boston Common Golf took the lead from the 12th hole thanks to an eagle putt by Michael Thorbjörnsen. The next two holes ended in draws despite hammer throws, leaving the score 6-5 in favor of Boston Common Golf before the final hole. Though a tie was still possible, 24-year-old Thorbjörnsen confidently sank the last putt for eagle, clinching the win.

Michael Thorbjörnsen was also the first TGL player to make four putts from beyond three meters in one match, closing the gap to his teammates and Ryder Cup rivals McIlroy and Keegan Bradley, significantly contributing to the team’s overall victory on the Palm Beach State College campus.
