Charlie Woods won his first title at an American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournament on May 28, 2025. The 16-year-old won the Team TaylorMade Invitational at Streamsong Resort (Black Course) with a total score of 15 under par (70, 65, 66) and defeated some of the best young players in the USA, including Miles Russell, Luke Colton, Tyler Watts, Willie Gordon and Phillip Dunham. In the end, his lead was three strokes.
Strong final round secures victory for Charlie Woods
Charlie Woods put in an impressive performance, especially in the final round. With a 66 (-6), which included eight birdies and four closing pars, he secured the title. He had already consolidated his lead in the second round with a 65 (-7). Woods, who is currently ranked 606th in the AJGA rankings, defeated four of the top five players in the field to mark a milestone in his young career.
This is Charlie Woods’ first AJGA victory in his fifth event. His best result to date was a tied 25th place at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley in March 2025. The son of Tiger Woods has already attracted attention on other occasions, such as at the 2024 PNC Championship, where he played with his father and caused a stir with his first ace in a top tournament. He also tried his hand at the US Open Qualifier 2024, but was eliminated.

The answer is: no. That Tiger Woods won’t tee it up at the PGA Championship this year comes as no surprise. The 15-time major champion is currently recovering from surgery on his left Achilles tendon and has already announced that he will not compete in any major tournaments this season. Still, for many fans, it’s a disappointment. Quail Hollow has been the site of many memorable golf moments – but once again, Woods will be absent. The 49-year-old continues to battle the long-term effects of numerous injuries, and a return to golf’s biggest stages remains uncertain.
Woods isn’t the only prominent name missing this week – several other well-known players are also absent, some for surprising, others for understandable reasons.
Champions Tour over PGA Championship 2025
Notably, five former PGA Champions – John Daly, Y.E. Yang, Davis Love III, Vijay Singh, and David Toms – have chosen not to play in Charlotte, opting instead to compete in the Regions Tradition, a major on the PGA Tour Champions circuit. Since the PGA Championship moved to May in 2019, this type of scheduling conflict had been avoided – until now.
John Daly explained his decision to the Associated Press as follows:
“I can go there and miss the cut and get $6,000. But I’m playing Birmingham. I love Regions. They’re a great sponsor. But why are they scheduling Regions the same week as the PGA Championship, where I can see Brooks [Koepka] and all the guys?”
Why more big names are missing
A number of current top-ranked players are also absent. Billy Horschel, currently ranked No. 24 in the world, is out due to hip surgery and is expected to miss several weeks. Shaun Norris (No. 101) reportedly declined his invitation due to his mother’s health. And Luke Clanton, ranked inside the top 110, is ineligible as an amateur – the PGA Championship is reserved for professionals.

The minimally-invasive surgery took place on Tuesday morning at the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida. “The surgery went smoothly, and we expect a full recovery,” said the attending doctor, Dr. Charlton Stucken.
Tiger Woods: Comeback delayed by multiple setbacks
Woods is now at home and focused on recovery. Although he has not shared his plans concerning the Masters, it is considered unlikely that he will take part in the first major of the year, which begins in just over four weeks. It has been eight months since his last appearance in an official PGA Tour tournament. He played the British Open at Royal Troon in July. With the injury to his Achilles tendon, Woods’ comeback remains uncertain.
The 15-time major champion has a long history of injuries: In April 2023, he competed in the Masters but had to withdraw during the third round. In the same month, he underwent surgery on his right ankle for post-traumatic arthritis, a result of his serious car accident in 2021. In September 2024, he had surgery on his lower back due to spasms and pain. Woods has been struggling with back problems on and off since 2014.
The field for the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Bay Hill is packed with top players, but Tiger Woods is not among them. He will not be teeing it up at the high-profile tournament in Bay Hill this week.

Beyond his individual schedule, Woods remains active in TGL.
