Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s big year, Donald’s thanks, and Couples’ new fashion. The Back Nine.
Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional career, but the 36-year-old isn’t slowing down. After winning the Masters to complete the career Grand Slam, securing the Irish Open, and helping Team Europe to a Ryder Cup victory on U.S. soil, McIlroy was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Yet he remains hungry: “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve.”
Among his goals is an eighth Race to Dubai title, which would tie Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel I have a few good years ahead. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free. The drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, where he also shared thoughts on the upcoming TGL season. He confirmed that Michael Thorbjornsen will join Boston Common Golf as a substitute for Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, who will be abroad during the season opener on January 2.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf is making another push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognition. Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board, revealed ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to expand its field and move to 72-hole events—key steps toward OWGR eligibility. “Golf is a meritocracy,” Immelman emphasized. “You have to earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s been central to our discussions.”
Luke Donald Thanks Team of the Year
McIlroy’s SPOTY win broke a long drought for golf, with no golfer winning since Nick Faldo in 1989. Adding to the celebration, Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup squad was named Team of the Year. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while the rest of the team joined virtually. Donald expressed his gratitude on social media, highlighting the team’s unity and achievement.
