Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional career by being named Sports Personality of the Year. But the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” said McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam with a Masters win, triumphed at the Irish Open, and helped secure a Ryder Cup victory on foreign soil. One goal? Winning a record-tying eighth Race to Dubai title. “I still feel like I have a few good years left. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. And the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside in Miami at the boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul, where he was again in the spotlight.
McIlroy and the TGL Season Opener
Whether McIlroy will spend the holidays in Florida or at his new home in England’s Wentworth Estates remains unclear. What is certain: he’ll tee it up on January 2 for Boston Common in the second season of the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL). McIlroy confirmed that 24-year-old Michael Thorbjornsen will join as a substitute for the team, which includes Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, and Hideki Matsuyama. “Hideki will be in Japan, Adam in Australia, so Michael will join Keegan and me for the opener,” McIlroy explained.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf is making another push for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board since April, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil—even exchanging messages during the PNC Championship. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to switch to 72-hole events and expand its field. “OWGR is about meritocracy. You have to earn and fight for your place. That’s been a key part of my conversations with Scott,” Immelman added.
Donald’s Thanks After Team of the Year Honor
McIlroy’s SPOTY win broke a long-standing golf drought since Nick Faldo’s 1989 victory. Adding to the celebration, Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup team was named Team of the Year for their win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy hoisted two trophies that night, joined by teammate Tommy Fleetwood. The rest of the team chimed in via social media, including a heartfelt message from captain Donald.
