Rory McIlroy Considers Major Iron Set Change in 2026 Season

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Is he set to change his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focused on making the next year equally successful. One potential change is in the 36-year-old’s choice of clubs, as McIlroy is testing a new set of irons with TGL. Having switched his driver and golf balls last year, another significant change might be on the horizon.

TaylorMade P7CB Instead of Rors Proto

Since 2017, McIlroy has been using irons from the TaylorMade Rors Proto line. However, during the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4 to 6 irons to the TaylorMade P7CBs. Now, it seems the rest of the set is following suit. Ahead of his play at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026, his TGL team released a video where McIlroy was asked, ‘What is the most important thing you’re currently working on?’ The 36-year-old responded, ‘I’m currently trying out a new set of irons, which I’m really excited about.’

Shortly after the video was published, Boston Common played its TGL debut match against the Los Angeles Golf Club and won. McIlroy used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9 and kept the Project X 7.0 shaft. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto clubs and offer him more margin on his shots.

Whether this will be a permanent switch to the P7CB irons remains to be seen, but it would represent a significant change in McIlroy’s game. This would be the first time the five-time major winner does not use blade irons in his set.

McIlroy’s Season Start in Dubai

McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, providing a clearer look at his bag and iron choice for the coming year.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods appear set to remain in the Northern Irishman’s bag next year, after first appearing at the HSBC Championship in November.
