Rory McIlroy Considers Major Change to His Iron Set in 2026

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Is he changing his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focused on making the next year just as successful. A change could be coming to the 36-year-old’s club selection as he tests a new set of irons at TGL. Last year, he already switched his driver and golf balls, and now another significant change may be underway.

TaylorMade P7CB Replaces Rors Proto Irons

Since 2017, McIlroy has used irons from the TaylorMade Rors Proto line, but at the Crown Australian Open, he swapped his 4 to 6 irons for TaylorMade P7CBs. Now it seems the rest of the set might follow. Before his game at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026, his TGL team released a video where McIlroy was asked, ‘What is the most important thing you’re working on right now?’ The 36-year-old replied, ‘I’m currently trying out a new set of irons, which I’m really excited about.’

Soon after the video’s release, Boston Common played their TGL opener against the Los Angeles Golf Club and won. McIlroy used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 through 9 and stayed with the Project X 7.0 shaft. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto clubs and provide him with more leeway on his shots.

Whether this will become a permanent switch to the P7CB irons remains to be seen, but it would mark a significant change in McIlroy’s game. It would be the first time the five-time major winner does not use blade irons in his set.

Rory McIlroy’s Dubai Season Start

McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, offering more insight into his bag and iron choice for the upcoming year.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods seem likely to remain in his bag next year after debuting them at the HSBC Championship in November.
