Rory McIlroy Considers Major Iron Set Change with TaylorMade P7CB

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Is he changing his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already aiming to replicate his success in the coming year. A notable change could be on the horizon regarding the 36-year-old’s club selection, as McIlroy is testing a new set of irons during the TGL season. Last year, he switched his driver and golf balls; now, another significant update might be underway.

TaylorMade P7CB Replaces Rors Proto

Since 2017, McIlroy has been using the TaylorMade Rors Proto irons, but at the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4 to 6 irons to the TaylorMade P7CB models. It now appears that the rest of the set may follow, as prior to his game at Boston Common Golf Club early in 2026, McIlroy’s TGL team released a video where he was asked, ‘What is the most important thing you’re working on right now?’ The 36-year-old responded, ‘I’m trying out a new set of irons, which I’m really excited about.’

Shortly after the video’s release, Boston Common played their TGL season opener against the Los Angeles Golf Club and won. McIlroy used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9, keeping the Project X 7.0 shafts. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto clubs, providing him greater shot flexibility.

Whether this will be a permanent switch to the P7CB irons remains to be seen, but it would represent a significant change for McIlroy. It would be the first time the five-time major winner does not use blade irons in his set.

McIlroy to Start Official Season in Dubai

McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, offering a closer look at his bag and iron choices for the upcoming year.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods are expected to remain in his bag next year, following their debut in his bag at the HSBC Championship in November.
