Rory McIlroy Tests New TaylorMade Irons Signaling a Major Bag Change

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Will he change his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After a dream year in 2025, Rory McIlroy is already focused on making the next year just as successful. A significant change might be coming in the 36-year-old’s club selection, as McIlroy is testing a new set of irons with the TGL. Last year, he already changed his driver and golf balls, and now the next big change could be on the way.

TaylorMade P7CB Replacing Rors Proto Irons

Since 2017, McIlroy has used the TaylorMade Rors Proto irons, but at the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4- to 6-iron to the TaylorMade P7CBs. It now appears the rest of the set may follow, as his TGL team released a video before his game at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026, where McIlroy was asked: “What is the most important thing you’re working on right now?” The 36-year-old responded: “I’m trying out a new iron set that I’m very excited about at the moment.”

Soon after the video release, Boston Common played against the Los Angeles Golf Club in their TGL season opener and won. McIlroy used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 to 9, maintaining his Project X 7.0 shaft. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto clubs, offering him more playing room on his shots.

Whether this will be a permanent switch to the P7CB irons remains to be seen, but it would mark a significant change in McIlroy’s game. It will be the first time the five-time major winner will not use blade irons in his set.

McIlroy’s Official Season Start in Dubai

McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, which will provide deeper insight into his bag and iron choices for the upcoming year.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods are expected to remain in the Northern Irishman’s bag next year, following their debut use at the HSBC Championship in November.
