Rory McIlroy Considers Major Iron Set Change for 2026 Season

Rory McIlroy tests new TaylorMade irons at the start of the year. Is he changing his entire iron set for the first time since 2017?

After a stellar 2025 season, Rory McIlroy is already focused on maintaining his success in the coming year. At 36, the Northern Irishman is testing a new set of irons at the TGL, potentially signaling a significant change in his club selection. Having switched his driver and golf balls last year, this could be another key update.

TaylorMade P7CB Replaces Rors Proto Irons

McIlroy has used TaylorMade Rors Proto irons since 2017. However, during the Crown Australian Open, he switched his 4 to 6 irons to TaylorMade P7CBs. The rest of the set appears to be following suit. Ahead of his match at Boston Common Golf Club in early 2026, McIlroy’s TGL team shared a video where he was asked, ‘What are you working on most right now?’ The 36-year-old replied, ‘I’m trying out a new iron set, which I’m really excited about.’

Shortly after the video release, McIlroy played in Boston Common’s TGL debut match against the Los Angeles Golf Club and secured a victory. He used TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 through 9, paired with Project X 7.0 shafts. The P7CB irons are more forgiving than his previous Rors Proto clubs, providing more leeway on his shots.

Whether this will become a permanent switch remains to be seen, but it would be a notable change for McIlroy, marking the first time the five-time major champion uses non-blade irons in his set.

Rory McIlroy to Start Season in Dubai

McIlroy will officially kick off his season at the Dubai Invitational from January 15 to 18, offering a closer look at his bag and iron choice for the year ahead.

His new TaylorMade Qi4D driver and fairway woods are expected to remain in his bag in 2026, after their debut use at the HSBC Championship last November.
