PGA Tour: Stephan Jäger Starts Top 5 at Farmers Insurance Open, Brooks Koepka Struggles

Stephan Jäger sits in the top 5 after a fantastic 65 at the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour. Brooks Koepka faces issues in his comeback round.

Stephan Jäger had an outstanding start to the Farmers Insurance Open on Thursday. With a round of 65, he is tied for 5th and close to the top. Other German players had a tougher time: Thomas Rosenmüller scored 2 under par and is tied for 55th, ahead of Jeremy Paul who is even par at T87, and Matti Schmid who finished 1 over par at T101. Brooks Koepka, returning to the American tour after his time with LIV Golf, also struggled and is tied with Schmid at T101. Leading after day one is Justin Rose with 10 under par.

PGA Tour: Stephan Jäger Nearly Flawless

Stephan Jäger recorded his best start in a while at the Farmers Insurance Open. On the North Course of Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, he played a near flawless round except for his start. On the first hole, his second shot landed in a bunker near the green, and he missed the up and down, starting his round with a bogey. However, Jäger did not let that shake him. On hole 3, he hit a strong tee shot on the 150-meter par 3 close to the hole for a birdie. A stellar stretch from holes 7 to 9 produced three birdies and placed him at 3 under par after the front nine. The highlight was a brilliant bunker shot birdie on hole 8. He continued the momentum in the second half with two birdies early on and two more on holes 16 and 17, finishing the round 7 under par and tied for 5th heading into the rest of the week.

Thomas Rosenmüller had a steadier round. Starting similarly with a bogey on his first hole, he birdied hole 9 to end his front nine at even par. Additional birdies on holes 11 and 17 earned him a 70 and a tie for 55th place.

Jeremy Paul began his round on the back nine but struggled mainly on the front nine with three bogeys that offset three birdies, finishing even par and T87.

Matti Schmid started on the back nine and managed three birdies but also had four bogeys due to inconsistent putting, finishing 1 over par at T101, needing a strong performance on Friday to make the cut.
