PGA Tour: Jeremy Paul starts strong at Butterfield Bermuda Championship

Jeremy Paul impresses with a 69 (-2) on Day 1 of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Rosenmüller and Schmid sit in the middle of the pack.

The Butterfield Bermuda Championship is underway this week on the PGA Tour. Jeremy Paul opened with a solid 2-under-par 69 on the challenging par-71 layout, placing him near the top of the leaderboard and in contention going into the next round. Thomas Rosenmüller (71) and Matti Schmid (72) had more inconsistent rounds and find themselves further down the field. Canadian Adam Hadwin leads after a 6-under round, followed by Japan’s Takumi Kanaya and American Braden Thornberry. Due to darkness, several players were unable to complete their rounds and will resume play the following morning.

PGA Tour: Strong back nine boosts Jeremy Paul

Jeremy Paul has shown improved form in recent PGA Tour events after a difficult mid-season stretch. The 31-year-old continued his upward trend with a steady performance in the opening round. Despite starting with a bogey on his first hole, Paul quickly recovered with a birdie on the 11th thanks to a successful up-and-down from the greenside bunker. He closed out the back nine with three consecutive birdies on holes 16, 17, and 18 to make the turn at 3-under. On the front nine, he added a birdie on the 5th but bogeyed the 2nd and 8th, finishing with a 69. At the time, this placed him T13, though several players had yet to complete their rounds.

Mixed results for Rosenmüller and Schmid

Thomas Rosenmüller experienced a rollercoaster first round, ultimately carding an even-par 71. His round began on the 10th and featured early drama, including a bogey on the 13th after missing the green, followed by a birdie on the 14th. However, back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 due to bunker trouble set him back. A birdie on 18 helped him finish the back nine at +1. He steadied his game on the front nine, adding a birdie on the 7th to return to even par for the day.

Matti Schmid had a rough start with bogeys on holes 1, 4, 5, and 9, offset only by a birdie on the 7th, leaving him at +3 after nine holes. He managed to regroup on the back nine, delivering strong drives and birdies on the 15th and 17th to post a 72 and move into the middle of the leaderboard.
