PGA Tour to Start 2026 Season Without The Sentry Tournament

The PGA Tour cancels The Sentry 2026 due to ongoing drought and water shortage in Kapalua, starting the new season in Hawaii with the Sony Open.

The annual fixture of The Sentry tournament at the Kapalua Resort has been removed from the PGA Tour schedule for 2026 due to persistent drought conditions on Maui, severely limiting water availability and irrigation capabilities. This decision ends the tradition of starting the season at Kapalua, a venue known since 1999 for spectacular drives and stunning Pacific vistas.

Water Cut-Off – Course Conditions Unsuitable for PGA Tour

In August 2025, it became evident that the Plantation Course was facing serious issues. Water supply was nearly entirely shut off, forcing the closure of both courses in Kapalua. Even after partial relaxation of restrictions, water availability remained insufficient to maintain the course in typical championship condition. The PGA Tour sent agronomy teams to assess, but the conclusion was clear: the tournament could not proceed under such conditions. Attempts to find an alternative venue were hindered by transportation, infrastructure, and scheduling challenges.

What’s Next for the Season Opener?

The return of The Sentry in 2027 remains uncertain as PGA Tour officials work behind the scenes on a new schedule. Proposals include shifting the season start to February, aiming to reduce competition with the NFL season. Led by Tiger Woods, a commission is exploring options for a more modern season structure, but no final decisions have been made. The Sony Open in Honolulu will now serve as the season opener, beginning January 15 at Waialae Country Club. This marks a significant calendar change since The Sentry traditionally welcomed previous year’s winners and top-50 players in a relaxed setting, whereas now the season commences with a full field. For 2026, the idyllic Kapalua course will remain quiet.
