As expected, Brooks Koepka has withdrawn from the 2026 LIV Golf season starting February 7 in Riyadh; the five-time major winner will remain connected to the rival circuit but needs more time for his family. This was reportedly agreed upon amicably according to LIV CEO Scott McNeil. However, Koepka is known as a competitor who gets motivated and fired up only through top-level sports competition, something he experienced only to a limited extent at LIV. He switched to the Saudi-backed league in 2022 mainly because of injury concerns ending his career and to secure a good retirement fund. It is therefore not surprising he gave up the last season contractually obliged, though questions remain about potential buyouts or repayment of guaranteed fees. He still owns his LIV team Smash GC, which has already named Talor Gooch as the new captain.
Speculation is rife on where Koepka will next appear. Could it be the DP World Tour, where he would be immediately eligible to play – likely with a penalty? Or the PGA Tour, where he would serve a one-year suspension after his last LIV appearance, since lifetime bans imposed by former Commissioner Jay Monahan have been softened significantly? Why be vindictive if every LIV returnee, especially a big name, serves the established tours’ interests? This crucial question seems partly answered. According to ESPN journalist Mark Schlabach, Koepka formally applied last Friday to reactivate his PGA Tour membership, which he did not renew after 2022, to be reinstated as a playing member.
