As expected, Brooks Koepka has officially opted out of the 2026 LIV Golf season starting February 7 in Riyadh; the five-time major champion remains connected to the competing circuit but needs more family time. This was mutually agreed upon, according to LIV CEO Scott McNeil. Koepka is known as a competitive spirit who thrives in high-level competition. He was less motivated in LIV, having joined in 2022 primarily to secure a lucrative retirement fund due to prior injuries. Questions linger though: did he buy out his contract or repay part of his guaranteed salary? Does the 35-year-old remain owner of LIV team Smash GC, which named Talor Gooch its new captain?
Speculation is rife about which fairways Koepka will appear on next. The DP World Tour would grant immediate eligibility, possibly with a penalty, or the PGA Tour, where he would serve a one-year suspension after his last LIV appearance, as the former lifetime bans from ex-commissioner Jay Monahan have been eased. The key question now seems partially answered. ESPN’s Mark Schlabach reports that Koepka formally applied last Friday to reactivate his PGA Tour membership, which lapsed after 2022, seeking reentry into the player pool.
