Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional career by being named Sports Personality of the Year. But the 36-year-old shows no signs of slowing down. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” said McIlroy, who in 2025 completed the career Grand Slam with a Masters win, triumphed at the Irish Open, and helped Team Europe to a Ryder Cup victory on U.S. soil. One target: an eighth Race to Dubai title, which would tie Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel like I’ve got a few good years ahead of me. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. And the drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. Naturally, McIlroy was asked for more thoughts there as well.
McIlroy Preps for TGL, Adds Thorbjornsen
It’s unclear whether McIlroy will spend the holidays in Florida or at his new home in England’s Wentworth Estates. What is certain: on January 2, he’ll make his season debut with Boston Common in the second edition of the TGL. With Hideki Matsuyama in Japan and Adam Scott in Australia, McIlroy confirmed that Michael Thorbjornsen will fill in alongside Keegan Bradley. “Michael will join Keegan and me for our first match,” McIlroy said.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf is renewing its push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognition. Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, said he’s in constant contact with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” Immelman said. LIV plans to shift to 72-hole events and expand its field. “The OWGR is about meritocracy—you earn your spot and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of my discussions with Scott,” Immelman added.
SPOTY Team of the Year: Donald’s Thanks
McIlroy wasn’t the only golfer honored at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year awards. Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup squad was named Team of the Year for their win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Captain Donald shared his gratitude on social media.
