Rory McIlroy: Still More to Achieve After Historic 2025 Season

Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.

Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional golf career by being named BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. But the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” McIlroy said after a season that included a Masters win to complete the career Grand Slam, victory at the Irish Open, and a Ryder Cup triumph on foreign soil.

McIlroy mentioned the possibility of winning his eighth Race to Dubai title, which would tie Colin Montgomerie’s Order of Merit record. “I still feel I have a few good years ahead. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. The drive to improve is still there.”

Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy was again in the spotlight, fielding questions from media and fans alike.

OWGR and LIV Golf: A New Chance?

The LIV Golf League is renewing its push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board since April, confirmed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV is reportedly moving to 72-hole events and expanding its field size. “The OWGR is about meritocracy. You have to earn and defend your place. We’ve worked with LIV to help them understand that perspective.”

Team of the Year: Donald’s Gratitude

McIlroy wasn’t the only one honored at the SPOTY awards. Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup team, victorious at Bethpage Black, was named Team of the Year. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Captain Donald expressed his thanks via social media, celebrating the team’s collective achievement.
