Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
After a career-defining year, Rory McIlroy shows no signs of slowing down. Following his Masters win, completing the career Grand Slam, an Irish Open victory, and a Ryder Cup triumph, the 36-year-old was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Yet McIlroy remains hungry: “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” he said. One goal? Matching Colin Montgomerie’s record with an eighth Race to Dubai title. “I still feel I have a few good years left. Thankfully injury-free, and the drive is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside in Miami at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match, where he again spoke to media.
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There Is a Chance’
LIV Golf is making another push for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board since April, confirmed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there is a chance,” said Immelman. LIV is reportedly moving to 72-hole events and expanding its field. Immelman emphasized the merit-based nature of OWGR: “You have to earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of my talks with Scott.”
McIlroy and Team Europe Honored
McIlroy’s SPOTY win broke a golf drought dating back to Nick Faldo in 1989. Adding to the celebration, Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup squad was named Team of the Year after their away win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, with others joining virtually. Captain Donald expressed his gratitude on social media.
