McIlroy Reflects on Stellar Year, Eyes More in 2026

Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.

After a career-defining year that included a Masters win, a completed career Grand Slam, an Irish Open victory, and a Ryder Cup triumph on foreign soil, Rory McIlroy has no plans to slow down. Speaking after being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, the 36-year-old said, “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve.”

McIlroy hinted at chasing an eighth Race to Dubai title, which would tie Colin Montgomerie’s record. “I still feel like I have a few good years ahead of me. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free, and the motivation to improve is still there.”

Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy was again in the spotlight, fielding questions from the media.

McIlroy and TGL: New Season, New Faces

It’s unclear whether McIlroy will spend the holidays in Florida or at his new home in England’s Wentworth Estates. What is certain is his January 2 debut with Boston Common in the second season of the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL). He confirmed that American pro Michael Thorbjornsen will serve as a substitute for the team, which includes McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, and Hideki Matsuyama. “Hideki will be in Japan and Adam in Australia, so Michael will join Keegan and me for our first match,” McIlroy explained.

OWGR Points for LIV Golf? “There’s a Chance”

LIV Golf’s quest for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points continues. Trevor Immelman, who chairs the OWGR board, revealed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV is reportedly moving to 72-hole events and expanding its field. Immelman emphasized the importance of meritocracy in golf: “You have to earn your spot and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of our conversations with LIV.”

Donald’s Thanks After Team of the Year Win

Rory McIlroy wasn’t the only one celebrating at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. Team Europe, captained by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year for their Ryder Cup win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while the rest of the squad joined virtually. Donald expressed his gratitude on social media, representing the team’s collective appreciation.
