Will LIV Golf earn OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new fashion.
After a career-defining year, Rory McIlroy shows no signs of slowing down. Following his Masters victory, completing the career Grand Slam, winning the Irish Open, and leading Europe to a Ryder Cup win, the 36-year-old was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Yet, McIlroy remains hungry: “I don’t know how I’ll top 2025, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” he said. One goal? Matching Colin Montgomerie’s record with an eighth Race to Dubai title. “I still feel I have a few good years left. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free. The drive to improve is still there.”
Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, ever the center of attention, gave interviews there as well.
McIlroy and TGL: New Season, New Faces
McIlroy’s next appearance will be with Boston Common in the second season of the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) on January 2. He confirmed the addition of 24-year-old American pro Michael Thorbjornsen to the team, stepping in for Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott, who will be in Japan and Australia, respectively. “Michael will join Keegan and me for our opening match,” McIlroy explained.
OWGR and LIV Golf: A Path Forward?
LIV Golf is making another push for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board since April, revealed ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” Immelman said. LIV plans to expand its field and switch to 72-hole events. “OWGR is about meritocracy. You earn your spot and fight to keep it. That’s the message we’ve emphasized to LIV,” Immelman added.
Team of the Year: Luke Donald’s Gratitude
McIlroy’s SPOTY win broke a golf drought since Nick Faldo in 1989. Adding to the celebration, Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup team was named Team of the Year for their away win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Captain Donald shared a heartfelt thank-you via social media.
