McIlroy Reflects on Stellar Year, Eyes More Success in 2026

Will LIV Golf get OWGR points? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new style.

Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional golf career with the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year award. But the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” said McIlroy, who completed the career Grand Slam with a Masters win, triumphed at the Irish Open, and helped secure a Ryder Cup victory on foreign soil.

One goal? Matching Colin Montgomerie’s record with an eighth Race to Dubai title. “I still feel like I have a few good years ahead. Thankfully, I’ve stayed injury-free and I’m still motivated to improve.”

Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, of course, drew attention there too.

OWGR and LIV Golf: A New Hope?

The LIV Golf League is renewing efforts to gain recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Trevor Immelman, chair of the OWGR board since April, confirmed ongoing discussions with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” said Immelman. LIV plans to expand its field and switch to 72-hole events, aligning more closely with OWGR standards.

“The OWGR is about meritocracy,” Immelman emphasized. “You have to earn your place on a tour and fight to keep it. That’s been a key part of my conversations with Scott.”

Team of the Year: Donald and McIlroy Honored

McIlroy’s night at the SPOTY awards was doubly sweet. Not only did he win the individual honor, but he also celebrated with Team Europe, named Team of the Year for their Ryder Cup win at Bethpage Black. While most teammates joined virtually, Tommy Fleetwood was on stage with McIlroy, and captain Luke Donald shared his gratitude on social media.
