Rory McIlroy: Still Hungry After Historic Year in Golf

LIV Golf eyes OWGR points, McIlroy reflects on 2025 and looks ahead, plus Donald’s thanks and Couples’ fashion.

Rory McIlroy has capped off what he calls the best year of his professional career by being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. But the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. With a Masters win completing his career Grand Slam, a victory at the Irish Open, and a triumphant Ryder Cup performance, McIlroy is already looking to 2026. “I don’t know how I’ll top this year, but I’ll try. There’s still so much more to achieve,” he said. One goal? Matching Colin Montgomerie’s record with an eighth Race to Dubai title.

Just a day later, McIlroy was spotted ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul boxing match in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, always in the spotlight, took time to speak with media there as well.

McIlroy Prepares for TGL and Welcomes Thorbjornsen

As the new season of Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) kicks off on January 2, McIlroy will lead Boston Common alongside Keegan Bradley. With Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama unavailable due to international commitments, 24-year-old Michael Thorbjornsen joins as a substitute. “Hideki will be in Japan and Adam in Australia, so Michael will step in,” McIlroy explained.

LIV Golf and OWGR: A New Hope

LIV Golf is renewing its push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. Trevor Immelman, chairman of the OWGR board since April, confirmed ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “There’s a chance,” Immelman said. LIV plans to expand its field and shift to 72-hole events to align with OWGR standards. “It’s about meritocracy,” Immelman emphasized. “You earn and fight for your place on tour. That’s been a key part of our discussions.”

Team of the Year and Donald’s Gratitude

McIlroy wasn’t the only golf star honored at the SPOTY awards. The European Ryder Cup team, led by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year for their win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while others joined virtually. Donald shared his thanks on social media, celebrating the team’s unity and success.
