Will LIV get OWGR points soon? Plus McIlroy’s ambitions, Donald’s thanks, Henseleit’s wedding and Couples’ new look.
Rory McIlroy capped off what he called the best year of his professional career by being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year. With a Masters win completing his career Grand Slam, an Irish Open title, and a Ryder Cup victory on foreign soil, the 36-year-old isn’t resting on his laurels. “I don’t know what I’ll do in 2026 to top this, but I’ll try. There’s still a lot more to achieve,” McIlroy said. One goal: tying Colin Montgomerie’s record with an eighth Race to Dubai title. “I still feel I have a few good years left. Knock on wood, I’ve stayed injury-free. And I’m still motivated to improve.”
Just a day later, McIlroy appeared ringside at the Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul fight in Miami, where Paul suffered a double jaw fracture. McIlroy, of course, was asked about his plans there too.
Whether he’ll spend the holidays in Florida or at his new home in England’s Wentworth Estates remains unknown. What is certain: he’ll debut with Boston Common in the second season of the TGL on January 2. McIlroy confirmed that Michael Thorbjornsen will serve as a backup for the team, which includes Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, and Hideki Matsuyama. “Hideki will be in Japan and Adam in Australia, so Michael will join Keegan and me for the first match.”
OWGR and LIV Golf: ‘There’s a Chance’
LIV Golf’s latest push for Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points is gaining traction. Trevor Immelman, OWGR chairman since April, said he’s in ongoing talks with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil. “We’re working closely to find a solution. I think there’s a chance,” Immelman said. LIV plans to shift to 72-hole events and expand its field. “The OWGR is about meritocracy,” Immelman added. “You have to earn your place and fight to keep it. That’s the message we’ve been communicating to LIV.”
Team of the Year: Donald’s Gratitude
McIlroy wasn’t the only one honored at the SPOTY awards. The European Ryder Cup team, captained by Luke Donald, was named Team of the Year for their win at Bethpage Black. McIlroy accepted the award alongside teammate Tommy Fleetwood, while the rest of the team joined virtually. Donald shared his thanks via social media, representing the squad’s appreciation.
