Korn Ferry Tour launches financial support programs for young pros

The Korn Ferry Tour introduces two new initiatives to provide financial security and reduce entry barriers for aspiring professionals.

The Korn Ferry Tour is restructuring its player development system by launching two financial support initiatives aimed at fully qualified Korn Ferry Tour players and former PGA Tour members. According to a press release by the PGA Tour, the new ‘Member Support Program’ and the ‘Pathways Player Achievement Grant’ are designed to ease the financial burden of pursuing a full-time professional golf career.

The ‘Member Support Program’ is the more comprehensive of the two and guarantees Korn Ferry Tour players a minimum income of $150,000 at the end of the season. To qualify, players must compete in at least twelve Korn Ferry Tour or PGA Tour events during the season and must have ranked outside the top 125 in the previous year’s FedEx Cup standings. If a player earns more than $150,000 in prize money during the season, the guarantee is void. If they earn less, the PGA Tour will make up the difference.

The second initiative, the ‘Pathways Player Achievement Grant’, offers a $15,000 stipend to players on the Korn Ferry Tour and other U.S. developmental tours. This grant is not tied to tournament participation and can be used for various expenses such as travel, lodging, or personal compensation. Eligible players include those from the Korn Ferry Tour, PGA Americas, and PGA University Tour.

Income guarantee in competition with other pro tours

These programs are part of a broader effort to enhance player support in response to similar initiatives by other professional tours like the DP World Tour, LIV Golf, and the Asian Tour, all of which have introduced income guarantees or compensation schemes.

The PGA Tour itself implemented a $500,000 income guarantee for fully exempt players in 2022. This amount is offset against prize money and requires participation in at least 15 events. Rookies and returning members receive the payment upfront, while others receive it post-season if their earnings fall short. Additionally, PGA Tour players with limited status receive a $5,000 stipend when missing a tournament cut. The DP World Tour followed suit in 2023 with a $150,000 guarantee, contingent on qualifying within categories 1–17 and playing in 15 events.

Is the support enough for Korn Ferry Tour players?

Despite the new programs, questions remain about whether the $150,000 income guarantee is sufficient, as travel and caddie expenses alone can approach this amount over a season. German DP World Tour player Nicolai von Dellingshausen highlighted these high costs in May, underscoring the financial challenges faced by aspiring professionals.
