Justin Thomas undergoes back surgery and will miss tournaments until at least early 2026. Shane Lowry steps in for Skins Games.
Two-time major champion Justin Thomas has revealed that he underwent a microdiscectomy in mid-November and will be out of action until at least early 2026. The American golfer had not played since the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage State Park, where he reportedly aggravated a disc issue in his back, resulting in recurring hip pain. In a social media post, Thomas explained the situation and said he is now in the early stages of recovery. “The next few weeks will be all about rest before rehab begins. I have a great team around me that I fully trust to get me back better than ever!” Thomas shared.
He added that he has not set a specific date or tournament for his return and emphasized the importance of a full recovery. “Before you ask: I haven’t planned a tournament or a specific return date. I’ll miss some events in early 2026, but I want to be smart and patient and let my back heal completely so it’s no longer an issue.”
Shane Lowry replaces Thomas at Skins Games
Thomas’ extended absence also means he will not be able to participate in the much-anticipated return of the Skins Games. He was originally scheduled to compete alongside Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, FedEx Cup champion Tommy Fleetwood, and two-time major winner Xander Schauffele. Taking his place will be Ireland’s Shane Lowry, who clinched the decisive point at the 2025 Ryder Cup. Lowry will join the Skins Games lineup on November 28, 2025, the day after Thanksgiving, at Panther National in Florida. It will mark Lowry’s first appearance on U.S. soil since his Ryder Cup heroics at Bethpage.
