Travel insider Jürgen Linnenbürger heads again to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), this time focusing on an emirate beyond the famous names and discovering a resort and golf course that impress sustainably.
A Quiet Gem
Ajman is the smallest of the seven United Arab Emirates. Oil wealth or superlatives are nowhere to be found here, which is exactly its charm. It convinces with tranquility, space, nature, and a golfing experience rarely expected in the Emirates.
Our journey to the UAE begins with the proven evening flight from Düsseldorf to Dubai. Emirates takes us nonstop overnight to the destination. Shortly before departure, we take advantage of an attractive upgrade offer and experience the A380 flight in its best form: an excellent menu, a seat that converts into a two-meter-long bed, and the legendary bar at the rear of the cabin. A cocktail, a short sleep, and a brief dream of sun, beach, and lush fairways make the 6 1/2 hour flight and the three-hour time difference no challenge.
Entry in Dubai is as smooth as picking up the rental car. Already an hour after landing, we drive at up to 120 km/h on the multi-lane highway heading north. Friday morning–comparable to a Sunday in the Emirates–means little traffic and a relaxed drive. After about 40 minutes, we reach our destination: the five-star Al Zorah Beach Resort in Ajman.
Discreet Luxury
The terraced five-star resort is nestled in a spacious natural area with direct sea access. The architecture is characterized by clear lines, glass, wood, and metal. Between them lie pools, gardens, and retreats that create an oasis feeling. Everything appears open, transparent, and airy.
On the ground floor are the impressive lobby, the library lounge, and the centrally located, bright main restaurant Vinesse.
Accommodation options range from spacious rooms and suites to exclusive villas with private pools. Prices vary by season, approximately between 350 and 450 euros per night for rooms and suites, while villas start around 1,500 euros. Not a bargain, but a coherent ratio of performance, location, and atmosphere.
Our Premier Ocean View Room with a private terrace convinces from the first moment. Located on the second floor, it offers ample space. Warm harmonized tones, clear lines, and subtle accents create a light and unobtrusive atmosphere. The spacious bathroom with striking tiles and a transparent, darkenable glass front to the living area underlines the modern standard.
Below us, through dense planting, we look over the pool, which at 85 meters has a record-breaking length for resorts. The Poolside Lounge offers light dishes and refreshing drinks. Occasionally, the turquoise sea shimmers through the palms of the manicured gardens. It is especially appealing in the evening lighting.
On the terrace of the main restaurant Vinesse, we start our day with a breakfast leaving nothing to be desired, offered as buffet and à la carte. In the evening, the restaurant impresses with tasteful Mediterranean, Arabic, and Asian dishes. We are particularly fond of the multi-course Indian Thali menu, whose spiciness we have to get used to.
