John Daly Eyes Ryder Cup Role in 2027, Endorses Tiger Woods as Captain

John Daly hopes to join Team USA for the 2027 Ryder Cup and backs Tiger Woods as a potential captain.

In an exclusive interview with Hard Rock Bet, John Daly shared his aspirations to be part of the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2027. Despite being a two-time major champion, Daly remains the only major winner since the Ryder Cup’s inception in 1927 to have never participated in the event. At 59, Daly admitted that the chances of being named captain at Adare Manor in Ireland are slim, but he still dreams of contributing to the team in some capacity.

Tiger Woods as Captain? Daly Thinks It’s a Perfect Fit

“I’d love to be captain one day, but that’s probably never going to happen,” Daly said. He went on to express his enthusiasm for Tiger Woods as a potential captain. “Tiger would be an incredible captain,” Daly added. “I’d love to be a vice-captain or just be part of the team in any way.”

While Daly’s candidacy for vice-captain may seem unlikely, his presence could bring a relaxed and spirited energy to Team USA. “I’d love to bring in my ideas and hopefully help the guys,” he said. “It’s something I’ve dreamed about since winning the PGA Championship in 1991.” Daly also mentioned he felt he should have been selected for the team twice in the past, but “it just didn’t happen.”

Patriotism and Team Unity Drive Daly’s Ambition

For Daly, being part of the Ryder Cup team in any role would be a meaningful consolation, especially given his deep patriotism. “I think our team just needs to come together more like a family and fully stand behind the United States of America, instead of thinking about what we get out of it personally,” he said. “I just want the Ryder Cup trophy.”

John Daly remains one of the most beloved figures in American golf, known for his massive drives and colorful personality. He won the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship. Despite his status, he has never played in a Ryder Cup. Nicknamed “Long John,” Daly is also remembered for his unconventional behavior—drinking beer from paper cups and chain-smoking during his first major appearance. His outspoken patriotism continues to resonate with fans across the U.S.
