John Daly Eyes Ryder Cup Role, Endorses Tiger Woods as 2027 Captain

John Daly hopes for a late Ryder Cup role in 2027 and praises Tiger Woods as a potential U.S. team captain.

In an exclusive interview with Hard Rock Bet, two-time major champion John Daly expressed his desire to be part of the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2027. Despite never having played in the event since its inception in 1927, Daly remains hopeful about contributing in a leadership role, though he admits the chances of being named captain at Adare Manor are slim.

Tiger Woods as Captain: Daly’s Dream Scenario

“I’d love to be a captain one day, but that’s probably never going to happen,” Daly said. Still, he shared his vision of Tiger Woods leading the team and himself serving in a supporting role. “Tiger would be an incredible captain,” Daly added. “I’d love to be a co-captain or just part of the team in any way.”

While the idea of a Woods-Daly leadership duo may seem far-fetched, Daly believes his presence could help the team play more relaxed and confident golf. “I’d love to bring in my ideas and hopefully help the guys,” he said. “It would be a dream come true, something I’ve wanted since winning the PGA Championship in 1991.” Daly also mentioned he felt he should have been selected for the team twice in the past, but it “just didn’t happen.”

Patriotism and Team Spirit Fuel Daly’s Ambition

Daly emphasized that his motivation stems from patriotism and a desire to see the U.S. team united. “I think our team needs to come together more like a family and fully support the United States of America, instead of thinking about what we get out of it personally,” he said. “I just want to win the Ryder Cup.”

Known for his long drives and colorful personality, Daly remains one of America’s most beloved golfers. He won the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship, yet remains the only major winner never to have played in a Ryder Cup. Despite his rebellious image—famously drinking beer and smoking during his first major—Daly’s patriotic fervor continues to resonate with fans across the U.S.
